4x4 Diff

Ok dont laught iam going to weld the diff on my lada 4x4 for offroad use only
arc or mig what do you think

if it has cast parts use arc with cast rods

if u are just locking the diff and welding the gears up just ark weld them up with steel rods
thats all we used on the stock cars just make sure the crap doesnt get in the bearings and on the face of the crownwheel

that reminds me of a clip somewhere on the net of someone who welded his differential. He couldn't understand why his vehicle wouldn't go, he'd welded the crown wheel to the pinion!

i allways use mig with standerd wire,done a few of my mates drifts cars now and havent had any problems

Me too - there never seems to be any cracking problems with the gears. I guess they are made from cast steel which you can often treat like mild steel.

MIG would be my preference if you have a big enough set to get some penetration. It's cleaner with no slag to get rid of, but there will be spatter, so it's worth masking off the crown wheel and pinion and the bearings to make clean up easy.

you weld up the planet gear so both rear wheels turn at once locked

Here's a pic of the one I did. You should be able to see the welds on the bit in the middle. (Both sides). Edit - Planet gears - thanks Brightspark, couldn't remember what they were called.

It's to stop the two wheels moving independently when you go around corners. Hold on to one output shaft and spin the other and you'll see what needs doing. Makes the cornering rubbish but you can power slide a bit better and get better times at Santa Pod.

Nah you dont weld em, according to another thread you just use gaffa tape, lol

I also welded the planet gears just like in the picture that malcolm posted and i used a MIG.
If it matters then it was also a Lada, but not the Niva...although their rear axels are pretty much the same, just that the Niva´s axle is a bit wider.
The things that changed were that it has much more grip on slippery surfaces and when cornering on a hard surfaced road with a slow speed you can feel the axel jumping a bit because the inner wheel is spinning as fast as the outer one...didnt really notice that musch when taking corners at normal speed buit maby thats just me
