do oxygen etc. bottles have a valve to stop them emptying?

I fancied using a couple of old oxygen bottles to store other gas, I'd need to vac them out first

but I remember someone telling me years ago they have a special valve witch prevents you ever really emptying them

even when there's no gas coming out of the valve you open, there's still some gas/presser in the bottle

kind of makes sense... saves they having to worry about contamination when they go to fill them?


I'll scupper my plans tho :-(

Nope. But I'd advise against it. Especially if you were putting fuel into it. You would basically turn it into a bomb. There is lingering gas but just at atmospheric pressure. You would need to suck/force the remaints out. Or leave it opened for a very very long time. You shouldn't ever let oxygen run out empty for this case. If your fuel exceeded the pressure of the empty tank they will mix in the bottle. The oxygen bottle is more dangerous than acetylene tbh.

The regulator itself prevents to completely empty the bottle .
But there's nothing design to prevent it built into.
It's just physics ,
Oxygen bottle it's a very big "cylinder" compared to the regulator diaphragm "cylinder" even a very little amount of pressure in this last one prevents a bigger one to come out .
It's the same principle related to hydraulic jack ,I don't know the specific names

I was told this as well,
A residual pressure valve.
Stops the bottle being completely drained to prevent moisture entering if they are left with the valve open.
Not sure what bottles that applies to though?

Has your vac pump got any oil in it? If it does, do you know what will happen when that oil gets exposed to 100% oxygen?
I wouldn't entertain putting incorrect gas into a bottle, definitely not an oxygen bottle.

Its' more the pressure with the oil contaminants. if you get that in between the bull connector and the regulator it will be like some kind of supersonic diesel engine.

Speaking certified gas blender here ,,, [ yes @hand pump another job ] from my commercial diving background ,.
If you dont know what you are doing , dont go messing with high pressure gasses , .
If you ever watch the way a diver handles pure oxy and the way welders handle the same gas , its quite educational .
Im sure we have all seen Acetylene hoses joined with a bit of copper pipe and some jubilee clips before ,, an old farmers trick ,,, and boys is that wrong ,. lol

Anything for oxygen service has to be degreased specially, one reason why you'll see little oil can symbols with an X through them on things like pressure gauges; it means Do Not Oil. Any oil residue will spontaneously combust in the presence of an oxygen rich atmosphere, pressurised or not.
I happen to work offshore and there was an incident on our rig a few years ago where someone was purging a crude oil line with nitrogen (common practice as it's an inert gas) but used an oxygen bottle by mistake. He was very lucky to survive, the resulting explosion and fireball hit him full in the face and melted his (glass lens) glasses.
Just saying, I wouldn't be putting anything into an oxygen bottle, empty or otherwise.

The couple of bottles that i have seen taken apart always have residual pressure.
Empty via the valve then undo the valve from the bottle a bit to let the rest of the pressure go.

Don't forget it's all very dodgy and you might die.

There is also the wrong gasses in the wrong bottles nightmare to consider.

I think the residual pressure might have something to do with not having to purge the bottle etc when it gets refilled.
