You might also look at using different wire. Others here have tried dual-shield wire.

I did find ER70S-6 was cleaner over the '56 wire.

hi all

i always use Argoshield Universal, cant say i have ever noticed any difference
really, i have welded exhausts, car steel and heavy plate

a lot of what i am doing at the mo is making tooth bars for scalloper's
they are 20mm thick, and they weld perfectly in spray transfer with the cheapest 1.2 mm wire i can find ( £12 all in )

im no expert but i have always found that most if my probs were down to fine tuning the welder

Yes a flux cored will give you a tidy weld nice in verts and a certified strength I use bohler thyssen lorenzo uses hobart, as for the gas mixes universal or heavy never had any issues most apperance failings are down to the operator.

Yes, the wire is important. I have had good results with Lincoln Electric wire.

The off-brand wires I have tried made a real mess.

I'm running ER70S-6 manufactured (or labeled) by RADNOR. You would recommend Lincoln wire? What type? I'm welding 0.250" tubing with my Miller 350P set on PULSE.

Mike, i'm not going to make any assumptions on what wire you're using, but spatter reduction may be accomplished by using a better quality wire eg Lincoln own brand, for instance. Also turning down the voltage a tad and playing with wire speed are pretty effective; or if you can't completely eliminate spatter (and if you can you're a better man than I), use anti spatter spray so you can wipe the spatter off after welding.

I know this advice may seem obvious, and you probably do these things anyway. I've never managed to totally eliminate spatter... or if I have i've never been able to work out why!

Lincoln and Hobart are available here in stores. I just picked up a roll of Hobart 0.035 wire, seemed to work well on 3/16" steel, but I am using it on this 30+ year old wire feeder/gun and still getting things set up right.

Have not done pulsed MIG. Supposedly it needs 0.040 (1mm) to achieve spray transfer on 75/25.

You might try another brand. Probably like the arc rod thread a while back. Every user had a different brand they preferred the results over the others.

I would try or the ones referenced by snowcat/Lorenzo. They are doing heavy stuff all day long; most of my stuff is small and by the time I get wire feed/voltage fine tuned, I'm usually done
