Fair price to spray Defender bonnet, wings and front panel?

Hi folks,

The laquer is peeling on my bonnet and wings on my Defender, so with new painted doors on order I took it to my local painter for a price.

I will be supplying him the wings, front panel and bonnet removed from the car, so the parts need rubbed down and painted Epsom Green which is laquered over.

Quote is £1560 including vat.

I know he does a really good job, but felt that was a lot, or am I just out of touch with prices?

That is a lot of dosh but paint, PPE, electric etc have gone up considerably. Say two days work at £50 to £60/hr for a workshop then materials isn't going to be far off to cover his costs and make a bit of profit.

You could most likely get it done cheaper if you look around.

£400 a panel ...does sound a bit rich

depends what sort of work he does , i guess if its stunning with no faults and you can take it back if it peels off then not crazy

guessing a trade place would be nearer £200 a panel ..whats this comment you ordered painted doors ? is it all going to match ?

The guys supplying the galvanized doors are supplying them painted with the same colour code, so am hoping not too different

id be very surprised if the new doors match the other panels old or new

if its something nice that needs to look good it might need the whole side going over

It is no show car, plenty dents and scratches, just want it took tidy with no rust.

if you just need clean n tidy i would keep asking around , that sounds like the sort of money you would be paying for top end work on a perfect car

Thanks, am thinking the same, I have contacted someone who is more of a back street cash in hand operation rather than an insurance company approved workshop.

Sounds like your guy has had one too many of the "just a quick blow-over, make it look nice" types, who then complain the new paint doesn't match the rest of the car, and highlights every single little dent, crease, etc in the panel, so he's either pricing a proper job, or simply wants you to go to a finisher who hasn't learnt the same lesson yet

A mate does it for £150 he’s upped it from £100 due to ever increasing costs

I’d be asking a few more people for quotes if I was you

i would guesstimate 200-250. you supply the paint.
stand you at 400ish all in. by a reputable painter.

1560 is concours prices.

doing panels you need to cut back the rest of the car. or they will stick out like a sore thumb.
more so with cellulose.

Thanks, I did cut back and polish it a year or so ago. Looks ok at a distance:

I was leaving the dings as character, whole car has some scrattches to the lacquer from offroading:

I had touched up the peeling laquer, now it has crazed after a couple of years and looks terrible:

some meat string round the lip of the rubber, tie tight. and then into a boiling pan of water with the rubbers so the rubber expands into the string.
have someone put force onto the window from the outside knot in first. pull the string.
if you ever take them out.

If you're on facebook ask on the spray painters UK or Refinishing Crew page. You don't want to go budget or you'll be paying twice. Well prepped with mid range materials and a gun finish type job is probably where you're at by the sound of things or don't bother and leave it as is.

most folk dont cut the hole for alpines big enough ,,, if you cut the hole too small they leak something shocking , hard to believe but a looser fit is a better job ,,, to check the fit offer the glass into the hole without the rubber , should be a pencil gap all the way round ,, just thought Id throw that in incase its handy for someone ,,, first ones I cut in I tried to get them really snug and nice ,, pain to fit , and leaked ,,, after that , its throw them in and let the seal do its job ,,,,, ie seal.

Usually pat £175 for the first panel and £125 every panel after that.
Bonnet usually smidge more due to harder to prep underside.

So would bank on £850-900.

Got some good news, now looking at £450 cash for the paintwork and prep!

Back street guy, has a Facebook site: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100068271624185 currently repainting a Series 1 and had a Series 2 that he is finishing a 300tdi conversion on.

Pleased to report he took the Bridgeport and Wilson lathe from the local workshop that was being cleared (thats them in the old workshop).

Can also powder coat my 5 Landy alloys for £220, so looks like an easy decission.

I would never powdercoat alloy wheels that are used off road. Its soft and damages easily and then water gets under the powdercoat. Much better to paint them properly.
