Fly press advice please!

Hi all! I need some advice on fly presses.

I want an idea of which fly press to look for, for hole punching purposes and my questions are:
1) Can a fly press punch 15mm holes in 5mm mild steel plate cold?

2) If so,to adapt a "Hunton bolster", what should be the minimum size neck be to accommodate the die, punch and work material?

I have never really used fly presses for much other than light bending.
I am unsure as to how much force a flypress can exert, but i can tell you how much force you would need, based on steel of 45kg/mm2

(c x t)x 45

(47.1 x 5) x 45
235 x 45 = 10597.5kg

I would imagine (and its no more than imagination) that if it would, you would need a half decent sized model, a #4 perhaps bigger... weight of the machine 250kg+

There must be a way to work out the applied force of a fly press, but i have no idea how!

I came to the same result, about 11 tonnes for cold rolled plate. as I said in another thread a few days ago, even a press I converted to hydraulic operation struggled to punch 15mm in 5mm plate, even with a 30deg shear, general rule for press sizing is the number of the press refers to the force in tons so no 4 is 4 tons,
We used to punch loads of 5mm plate but always either in a geka, or pels metalworker, or using redman punch frames in a promecam

Yeah I looked at that and was seriously considering it when the versitality of a flypress for doing other stuff appealed to me.
Thing is I already have a hydraulic press which would still allow me to do some forming etc.
I suppose it's pretty much a no brainer really in choosing the Baileigh because of it's price, choice of punches/dies and a 10 ton force that was quoted from another site that had a identical machine.
With the flypress, you have to get one , buy a Hunton bolster, get the punch/dies you need and it would be roughly the same cost.

The Baileigh looks to be the winner!

Overload, punching holes in thicker stuff is all about die clearance and how much breakout you can live with on the underside of the material.

15m Holes in 5m Mild steel plate done manually I would say absolutely not, even with a big fly press.

A 6-man fly press can be capable of quite heavy work, as these photos show. Sorry about the image quality, but I was using a little half-frame Canon Demi without flash (all I could afford back in 1975), and the Indian workshop did not waste much energy on artificial lighting.

My 30 ton Geka punch press has a capacity of 27 through 13 I think. You would need arms like Lou Ferrino to punch the size your looking at on a fly. If you are doing a lot of holes a decent press like mine 2nd hand you could probably pick up for under £1k occasionally. Great for slotting.

I've never seen a Geka 30 tonne for <1k, and I keep my eyes open. Maybe an old mechanical style one.

It's hydraulic and it's 50T I think, my mistake. Yep saw you're link, it's not a flypress. When I make the jump to an ironworker later this year you can buy mine for around £800, how's that?

Ah, I thought it was an ironworker, fair enough if its just the punch.

I know its not a flypress, but its a manual press. He wants a press to punch holes. This is one.

i have rare no 8 hand press, it would give around 6 1/2 metric tonnes of pressure, however, you would only have the energy to punch about six holes a day at 15mm thro 5mm thick!!,

Buy a cheap mechanical powerpress, fixed stroke 20ton are around a couple of hundred quid, howerever they come under the powerpress regs and you need a rospa type setters cert to legally use one, and they should be inspected at least one a year as well (about 60 quid), a hunton type of even home made bolster can be made to accomadate press tools.

This is what makes it easier on deciding if its worth the expense when there is not alot of info to go on for what it is like to work with!
