Can only image they spoof canbus transmissions.
I'd rather get it done professionally and have a place to return when it all goes tits up.
Personally I think the manufacturers probably know best
So would you rather give your cash to some oik thats played with a lap top and messed about with a fuel map spread sheet than stick to the guys who designed and built the thing in the first place ,,They have to map them to average across different climates, fuel quality, driving styles etc. to give best economy and emissions so you are better off getting it remapped to suit you, whether it's performance, economy, towing etc.

There are some of the big chip / map sellers that claim all sorts of things and have great adverts and fantastic websites etc ,, but ,, if they could do half the things they claim wouldnt the manufacturer just do these too and claim more power / better acceleration / more economical etc etc , after all its as easy for them to adjust the map to suit the point of sales as it is the tuners to do it later. The trend at the moment round here is for small diesel cars to put out clouds of black smoke ,, they call that chip tuning too .

65 Mpg I got out of my 2.0 litre passat estate going to Bristol Airport yesterday.Any modern common rail turbo diesel vehicle I've driven in the last ten years gos plenty fast enough for me.
Last thing I'd do is try to squeeze more power out of it at the risk of compromising its reliability.
