Anyone near Stockport fancy welding my Fourtrak?

Morning all!

Its about time i registered for the forum as have been looking at the info for a few months now - lots or really good info on here.

I'm looking for someone to do some welding on my Fourtrak for its MOT. Its been sat on the drive since August and i just havent got around to doing the welding. If someone would like to give me a rough idea on a price to do it i would be most grateful. Could post some pics if that would help?

I'm in Hazel Grove, just outside Stockport and the car can be worked on whilst on my drive. I do have a SIP topmig turbo 150 and a 16a supply but i havent had much success with the test pieces, might be faulty kit or more likely operator error!! So you could use my mig or bring your own.

It needs:

Both outer sills either repairing or fabricate new
Holes repairing to rear floors - 1 each side where floor meets rear arch
Holes repairing to top or rear arch - 1 each side
Small plate on boot floor.

The rear floor holes are within 30cm of the rear seatbelt mounts, but i've removed the whole interior and now intend just using it as a van so the old belt mounts could be chopped out if required.

Oh, i also have almost a full sheet of 1.5mm sheet that might be useful?

Not volunteering but do you have gas if anyone does want the job ? If I was closer I'd have looked at it with you.

I forgot to mention that! I've got co2 in a pub gas bottle with the correct regulator. Think its almost full too.

Had a bit more of a prod at it today and there might be a few other little patches to do under the arches whilst its part stripped - i guess it might as well be done in one hit rather that doing more next year!

If it's anything like our F78 it'll be rotten as hell!
The F75 we sold a while back had less rust on it!
PM me if you want the genuine Fourtrak workshop manual, think it only covers F73 and 75 but some of the info might be good for other models.

Yep, its an F78, the bits i've chopped out were very bad but i think it'll still make a nice 4x4 when its finished. Mainly used for work so need it to be practical rather than pretty.Its been so reliable and strong for towing that i couldnt bear to replace it.

Try yellow pages or a local directory, that is where I would start off looking for cheap repair job.

They're cracking cars, wife uses hers for towing the horse and you wouldn't even know it's on there!
I must admit, good as they are, the handling leaves a lot to be desired!

Fourtrak Welding

Hopefully i'll pull my finger out and learn to weld properly over summer, just havent got time for trial and error at the moment!

Will pop some picks on here later incase anyone else can give me some pointers.

I'm sure if you get someone to weld your truck,you will learn a lot by watching and asking questions ,maybe they can check your set up for you?......would be nice to check how good their welding is before letting then loose on your truck as well,if you don't know them or haven't seen their work before ,........there are a few on here that are happy to help and advise in person ,if you are struggling..good luck

What I've always done when having some welding work done on anything is to do all the prep. before someone else does the welding. Prep. is a fairly easy but time consuming job so best to do it beforehand.

There are plenty of pointers on here to the minimum amount of cleaning you need to do. Also it will show you how much actually needs to be welded beforehand.

Something might look quite small on the outside but when you've cut away where you think the rust goes to and find it goes further it starts getting worrying.

I think as a few have suggested its probably best to get someone to do the work this time but watch & help so i've got a better idea for next time - i might even start the work on my Mini then!!

I started some prep a few months ago but think i need a bit more tidying and cleaning, here are some pics:



Still looking fairly tidy considering its near 200k miles!

Next 3 pics are passengers side rear floor, rear arch and rear arch from underneath. Holes are all within 300mm of the rear seatbelt mounts but the rear seats are not going back in, the boot will just get ply lined:

And lastly we have the sills - havent started cutting these out yet, but they were bubbling so the previous owner painted over them! Cant believe i didnt spot it when i bought it, or the take away foil tray shoved into the sill and fillered over!! :





The inside shots make it look like the whole floor is rusty, its actually just the crap thats been ground out and havent got around to hoovering the floor.
