Bonding Rubber to Metal

I have a project where I need to Bond Rubber to Metal that will stand up to some use.
The contact area will be up against a metal surface and will be removed and refitted periodically so needs to be robust.
Area to be Bonded is the contact sides of Angle Iron 50Lx50Wx50H
Any thoughts ?

can you counter bore and bolt the rubber ... leave the heads low and let the rubber do the work ,,
theres probably a glue specifically for this , how critical is it. could you bolt on rubbermounts , like they use in washing machines .

i bet it wouldnt work on bonded rubber to metal on carburettor mounts on a microlite i had some drop off at 300 foot and did an emergency landing

It all depends on how much i like you and how much i would try convince it would work...

My old flying instructor friend used to say ...

you could do that if you want ,, but you will be first to arrive at the scene of the accident ...

always made me smile , then think hard about what it was that I probably shouldnt be doing.

Is this a job which needs some kind of rust-resistant primer to be applied to the metal first? Does the job see much in the way of temperature changes? As metal and rubber expand at very different rates, that's a real stress-raiser.

Loctite 380 is good and fast, even faster if you use a primer.

To add some details, The Rubber is purely to protect the item it comes into contact with and needs to with stand a weight of approx 100kg down ward force.
Side ways is literally to keep it in position negligible force applied probably 1kg tops.
They need to be Bonded as I can't afford the work piece to get damaged.
I'd rather not say what it is as I intend to take it to market and need the drop on the Chineese Copy Cats.

Can you use the extra special " Bondic " and stick the rubber to a steel liner that's counter sunk screwed to the angle iron that way you can take it off & put it back on to your hearts content . I've stuck some thick old tractor inner tube to my farm gate so it doesn't clang when it's shut , it's been on there maybe 15 years .

Another thing might be to get hold of some of the super thin sticky pads used to stick internal car mirrors to the front window screen.

You can also get PTFE buttons about 50 mm in diameter by 6 mm thick bonded to a steel backing washer for table legs on wooden floors etc , .. could they be used https://www.wonderglides.co.uk/50mm-round-screw-in-ptfe-teflon-glides-pads.html

I cannot give to much away but i work in the rubber industry here in Australia bottom line see if you can get your hands on some Pliobond it used to be made by goodyear and is still around man it it can stick it to a blanket so to speak it was the original and the best is Lord Chemlock and this is commonly available here in Australia https://www.lord.com/sites/default/files/Documents/TechnicalDataSheet/DS3459_LORD7650.pdf good luck with it mate

Is grit blasting the metal surface also a good idea? A long time ago, I used to work for company which did a lot of metal/rubber bonding, but I was not directly involved with it. I know they put a lot of time in to getting right for some critical and long-life defence requirements, much more demanding that in this case.

Probably over kill but worth a thought..

What's the rubber composition? That will determine which adhesive is best.

I’d use 3M VHB tape.

Not sorted the Rubber yet but looking at EPM Rubber seal 5mm thick 50mm Wide on a roll.
Thinking maybe cutting a strip long enough to follow the Black line so there's no join at the Angle, Making a clamp to mirror the L and hold it until a decent Bond occurs with what ever I decide to use as the Sticky Stuff.

We use continental contisecur. For fixing rubber to steel inside a ballast hopper. So pretty robust stuff to say the least.
