lost my job last june? worked for same comp for 20 years welding vans been welding for 30 years was tought by my dad he was a coded welder had to take bs2000 and what ever it is every year? got a nvq2 in mig thing is iv been told that i have no chance of getting employed decause i do not have any certs and not enough expereance? im gob smacked told to take a packing job

Sorry to hear that dude. Start up your own business if you cant find a job anywhere....although i'm sure you could find work with 30 years experience?

Sorry to hear you've lost your job. Think telling you to go and get a job packing is harsh, it's difficult to say without knowing exactly what you did in your last job but to honest from what you've said you wouldn't get a job as a skilled welder/fabricator in a general fabrication company. I would try looking for welding jobs in similar types of companies i.e. somewhere they fabricate and weld the same items such as lockers, trailers etc or you could approach your local fabrication companies and explain the situation and they might be able to find something for you as you do have some skills.

I haven't worked in the industry for 5 years but unless things have changed I wouldn't worry about the coding thing. I have only worked for 2 companies out of 10-12 who needed you to be coded and they paid for it and arranged it. When you start getting in to coding it is very complicated as to what you are coded to weld and not unless you have a 6g/g6 (can't remember which way round) and that doesn't cover you for it all as your only covered for half the material thickness up to double the thickness of the test piece. Generally the only jobs that require you to be be coded before you can get a job are oil rigs, nuclear power stations etc real high end stuff.

Good luck with it, i've just started a job this week after 6 months on the dole so I know what it's like, it sucks

I have to agree with Volition. Its hard for us to pass judgement when you say youve been welding up vans. Is that in a factory enviroment, coachbuilders....?

You just have to do the test when you start, to prove you know which end of the torch you have to hold! we have had a few plonkers who thought they were welders apply

i no what you mean had lad said he could mig weld once he stood there trying to light the to torch could not figger out why it was blowing is lighter out had another that said he could mig weld was trying to strike an ark the gaffer used to send them over to me to see if thay could weld i used to turn the wire feed an the curent down to see if thay new what thay where doing some could weld but not set the welder up to use on diferrent thicknesses of steel ?iv tought alot of young trainees to weld? to used to tell them to tell there girlfrends that welders make good lovers becouse thay can do it in all positions the old ones are the best
