Drill chuck buying advice?

Depends on the chuck. The ones that are on my Milwaukee drill you lock with a 1/4 turn anti clockwise. It’s then good in either direction.

I’ve used taps and lh drill bits in it fine.

Other ones that you can’t lock I think you’re not supposed to reverse so you’re right there

Thanks, @Brad93! Very interesting about Jacobs, I didn't realise. What I'd really like is a Precision Matthews (0.001" max runout), but shipping to UK is a problem. It's a shame there's no local supplier.

Precision Matthews are just imported Chinese or Taiwanese stuff.
Nothing wrong with them but you will get the same chuck 1/3 the price anywhere else.
Just buy an old British or American Jacobs - Albrecht are very nice but very expensive for a good one.
CVA chucks are nice as well.

The drill has a B16 taper, cheap B16 keyless chucks can be found on Amazon (for example) for about £10 and up.
I found the keyless much easier to use, downside; it is longer, reducing the drill depth capacity.
I extended my Nu-tool bench drill column to give better usable depth.

My pal Paul happened to find a perfect thick walled diameter tube match for his NU tool drill press that had a racked table adjuster in the scrap at his engineering work place just under six foot five long , his boss let him have it for a £10 donation to the Barnado's charity box in the company's reception area .
Paul fabricated a new heavy duty strong steel foot plate & I helped him chemical anchor bolt it to his mancupboard floor then lift the drill head & new stalk into the foot plate . Bit of an over kill I thought , till he told me of his idea of putting a crank/arm in the tube in the future and turning the press into a radial drill with a 500 mm clearance from the drill centre to the tube and making an adaptor plate for the table for an 8 inch drill vice .

I have one like this made by "Futec" and it's junk. Concentricity is appalling and it mustn't tighten all 3 jaws evenly, because I regularly get strip-out on the shafts of drill bits.
RDG Tools says "you won't believe the quality", but then again, they're in the business of sales, so...

hold 1-13mm drill (0-16mm is a bonus).

All my chucks stop some ware around 2.5mm , I got a nice new old stock ity bitty chuck for all the smaller drills.
