Depends on what software you want to run. A generic elm327 will read codes and do most things to a lot of cars if you have the right software but it won’t work unless the software you want is compatible

Bought a cheap one off ebay £12, have used it twice to diagnose and clear faults so it's paid for itself already.

A blutooth OBD adapter and spend about £4 on torque pro for your phone. My usual autel scanner went missing so dug this out the other day, it read network fault codes the autel never and even ended up resetting the ABS fault light. For an outlay of £15 - £20 its pretty good going

Sorry to drag up an old thread but can you recommend a Bluetooth adapter as alot seem to get very mixed reviews. I was going to get a very cheapy reader but the idea of diagnosing abs lights seems good

I bought the Carista OBD adaptor, used their software (monthly subscription based) for one month, then installed "Car Scanner ELM OBD2" by "0vZ" from google play store and it reads and resets all the ECUs on my car, is free (has a paid option which unlocks a bunch of live data features) and can use the Carista adaptor fine

It does read the ABS ECU on my nissian qashqai (not had any faults on that one so I don't know the full extent of it's features on that ABS)
