Can i practice without gas?

Or will this damage the tungsten?

In a word No.

The tungsten will just oxidise and disappear in a puff of smoke, I'm afraid if you want to tig weld you'll have to buy, rent or borrow a pure argon cylinder.

It's still TIG welding, whether it's "for real" or "for practise".

You'll soon find that Argon will be your biggest outlay when TIG welding. £10 worth of Tungstens will last you much longer than £100 worth of Argon.

I found that it glowed a lovely red colour and got rapidly shorter, about 0.5mm/s. No puffs of smoke though.

Ive done it just to test a welder to see that it works for a couple of seconds but it did burn out the tungstern very quick.
