Decorating stuff - paint rollers?

Not a metalworking related question, but I suspect somebody will have some good suggestions. Any painters on here?

I hate decorating. I usually try and avoid it.
I'm painting several moderately sized ceilings with a cheap screwfix roller on a broom handle and it is getting really old pretty quickly.
Apparently my neck and back have aged a lot since the last time I did any. I can sympathise with Michelangelo....

I'm not after an immaculate finish, but I suspect investing in a better roller frame and sleeve might make a neater and easier job of it, or at least annoy me marginally less.
I already have some reasonable brushes so can appreciate the difference half decent kit makes.

This is a mixture of fresh plaster and a recoat, with cheap and cheerful contract matt.

I had a quick look around and as with everything thesedays it seems to have got excessively complicated.

Losing the will to live trawling through the millions of options but I'm currently leaning towards a ProDec Titan frame and the Hamilton Perfection sleeves, and possibly upgrading the broom handle to a Sherlock GT pole.
Is that lot any good? Anybody got recommendations for a reasonable 9 inch roller that doesn’t fall apart, a sleeve that puts a decent amount of paint and leaves a passable finish?

I don't want to go too mad, it might encourage more of it.

This is all you need and all I use.


Don't use cheap paint it's a waste of time. Armstead trade emulsion is brilliant.

Those cost real hard-earned pennies, which is contrary to this Forum's ethos!

I just use a plastic bag and elastic band around the handle end.

Works for the brushes as well.

Caution: I have only used this for overnight storage. So I don't know safe this would be for several days' storage. I use it with oil-based paint on brushes as well, but again only for short periods.

I can see it would be appropriate for professional use though.

An extension pole makes a huge difference. Second the plastic bag over the roller to stop it going off. Plus the paint trays with tray liners and a lid that seals over the tray.

I'll check out the Harris roller and sleeves.

I must admit I've always used bin bags or plastic dust sheet wrap rollers and line trays, especially with gloss. I don't want to look too professional now, might give people the wrong impression!

I think that is actually a bit of a myth, I believe he got neck ache like the rest of us.
I reckon he should have sprayed it.

Prodec are okay. Avoid Harris at all costs.

Hamilton rollers are fairly good.

Wooster and Purdy are some of the best. Dulux decorator centre sell them.

A good brand for rollers a lot cheaper is Arroworthy.

Oil based paints, get a brushmate.

I bought a Harris roller and found they have changed the thread in the handles so it only fits their own brand poles, I won't use them anymore.

To tag onto the end of this, what roller would I need for Artex? (Actually. it's not real Artex but textured paint meant to look like Artex. It was popular in the 70s/80s (or so I'm told ))
