Welding new tang onto old sword?

Just a quick question...

An old, knackered, 1863 NCO sword from the US. Not valuable at all, but of interest. The blade had been snapped off at the point where the tang narrowed to fit inside the hilt. the top end is all missing so I just have a 3-foot blade. Is there a good way to put a new tang on so someone can make a new grip etc for it?

Assuming you're not gonna use it in anger, nickel with a preheat and a slow cool.

How hard is the inside of it? Drill down axially, tap to a suitable size and then have a male threaded bit on the replacement tang. Loctite it in.

With the welding option, a short, unthreaded boss on the new tang going into a shallow hole in the blade will help to keep it in position.

If you are going to use it, forget it. No weld will stand up to the forces in that area. I used to fight and any sword that broke was binned. not worth the risk on the field

No. It will never be strong enough and even if you were to "fix" it for cosmetic purposes, there is a danger that one day someone will pick it up and have a nasty accident.

Post a pic. The good news is that if there's enough meat on the thing, you could shorten it enough to cut out a new tang from the remaining blade. It is worth saving a decent piece of nicely shaped steel but you will end up with a short sword or maybe a useable knife...

Forge welding to repair and remake swords is a standard practice in the old days. The shank is not such a big problem. Moreover, the blade of those times should be made of crucible steel. This is not flash iron with slag.

Basically it is one of these and is snapped exactly where the steel goes into the Brass. I'll try to get a pic when it comes out of de-rusting.
