Which is what the engine loom represents.
lol ,,, then youve solved your own problem ,,,, new wire needed . if you think the keyswitch / barrel is the issue, fit a starter knob , the big heavy duty plant type ,,, big and heavy duty brass wins every time on boatsThat's what my issue is.
Big fat wire starts it.
3 m 2x1.5 doesnt.
1.5 m 2x1.5 does.
But isn't the excitation on a starter motor low volt / amps and actioned by the ignition barrel, no relay needed. ???lol ,,, then youve solved your own problem ,,,, new wire needed .
only if its getting volts ,,, if they are missing then theres an issue ,,, if it starts with a small bridge wire ,[ like joy riding] the rest of the systems grand ,,, bung a bit of fresh MARINE GRADE two core in and wire it to a push button on the dash ,,,, jobs a good un .But isn't the excitation on a starter motor low volt / amps and actioned by the ignition barrel, no relay needed. ???
That was my understanding.
Denzo £200+ starter motor.
But this starter motor was new two weeks ago.
but if its working when you bridge the solenoid from the starter input cable its not the contactor or the motor , or the earth side either ,,,New starter nice clean contacts so the volt drop not pulling the solenoid in fully is no problem, after a while the solenoid contacts are getting arced /burnt so it needs the full fat 12+ volts to bang it in, stick another relay in job done
Yep, proper Denso / Denzo starters.Doesn't mean much these days Mat, are you buying genuine Nippon Denso? We have had no end of grief with aftermarket Kubota starters.

I'm really thinking this is the solution. If its a sod to rewire, fit a relay next to the starter.. use the existing wiring to switch the relay, and use a wire from the heavy main terminal of the starter motor to the solenoid through your new relay
Nope ,, its only introducing something else to cause grief down the line , before I would do that Id keep an old screwdriver in the engine beds ,,, keep things simple and dont add doodahs and farkles if you dont need to , fix the problem not work round it ,,, it worked when it was built without relays , it will work now. next it will be bluetooth the starter from an app on your phone ,,, lol ,,, keep it simple , its a boat . if you only have one engine simple and reliable is a must.If its a sod to rewire, fit a relay next to the starter.. use the existing wiring to switch the relay, and use a wire from the heavy main terminal of the starter motor to the solenoid through your new relay
fix the issues and you wont need a relay ,,,,Use a relay with a defeat button on it, and you wont need the screwdriver
it starts when the starter is bridged ,, so heavy side is ok , only leaves the loom as the issue. ,,, been mentioned earlier .Are the battery cables ok? I’ve seen problems with crimped on battery terminals and negative cables becoming corroded inside the insulation. The engines would still start but caused low volts elsewhere
Yes.Silly question.... when you measure the 10ish volts, and the solenoid is clicking.. have got the main wire connected to the starter?, have you measured the battery volts when it clicks
I can bridge +ve to excitation, and it starts every time, with a thick wjre. Are the battery cables ok? I’ve seen problems with crimped on battery terminals and negative cables becoming corroded inside the insulation. The engines would still start but caused low volts elsewhere
yep, all good, excitation circuit is the issue. Are the battery cables ok? I’ve seen problems with crimped on battery terminals and negative cables becoming corroded inside the insulation. The engines would still start but caused low volts elsewhere
as above. Are the battery cables ok? I’ve seen problems with crimped on battery terminals and negative cables becoming corroded inside the insulation. The engines would still start but caused low volts elsewhere
What ? You've lost me.I had a clockwork starter that could be bolted toeither of my engines if they wouldnt start electrically ,,, ten mins and three bolts , then wind up the clockwork motor with a ratchet and bang the big button on the side , and it would swing the engine , and off it would go ,,, and they were 6 liter straight six diesels ,,, I really do like simple.
No.Is there a starter inhibitor switch in the line? Like the ones that stop you cranking an engine over when its in gear.
Bob
yes, please expand on that.it starts when the starter is bridged ,, so heavy side is ok , only leaves the loom as the issue. ,,, been mentioned earlier .
