I'm not sure that a washing powder will go much to help that; maybe it could have other benefits?
The reason for adding carbonate is to increase the ionic content of tap water and increase conductivity and get a higher current. I'm not sure that a washing powder will go much to help that; maybe it could have other benefits?
Haha. You beat me to it.
Haha. You beat me to it.
Literally just back from the shops for a bag of this.
Due to what was said above (about not using salt) I looked at the ingredients.
I don't know anything about chemistry but the first thing sounds like salt to me
£1.47 from B&Q
salt?
Yup, it's the chloride bit that's bad news, like using hydrochloric / brick acid - the fumes alone will start anything within half a mile rusting. It's *a* salt - but not "table salt".
Table salt is sodium chloride
Nope, it's the rust reduced from Ferric (III) Oxide (Fe2O3) to Magnetite, Ferric (II, III) Oxide (Fe3O4), I get it using carbon electrodes insteead of iron for the sacrificial anode too. It's magnetic so I wonder if it could be removed magnetically, but it'd probably have you hanging from the magnet by your flies if it were strong enough...I have used lye or washing soda, but I get the black residue regardless. I wonder if it's my water or something else, like the electrodes whch tend to be random scrap.
Two months ago 1kg was 79p from home bargains. You can also pick up some of their anti-cut work gloves from the gardening section - brilliant at £2.50 per pair!Haha. You beat me to it.

Cathode to anode short circuit?
Hi there. How much current was it drawing?
Chances are you had too strong an electrolyte or too high a voltage (or both).
"Weak connection" looks well dodgy too but that's a given. I wouldn't want to pass more than an amp or two through that!
Is it a modern "smart" battery charger? They're carp for electrolysis because they won't deliver current unless they think there's a battery connected - the old transformer and meter ones are what you want, couple of Local Currency Units at the bootsale.Hi there.
I've no idea what the current was as the charger just had coloured lights but I think it'll be the electrolyte
It didn't cross my mind that this could be an important factor but this tub is much much smaller (volume) that my other tub (loft water tank) and am guessing I used about a bag of soda crystals in both mixes. I will have the receipt somewhere from my previous tub and it may have been 2 but certainly not 3 bags
much bigger tub with (possibly) same amount of soda crystals prev time and no issues with smoking -VE lead
Err, right. You're not trying to dissolve the thing are you?
I'd be measuring it out in cupfulls. One or two for the first tub.
No I started off with one of those and, as you say, it did nothing as it didn't recognise it or whatever so I changed to an old thing and it worked straight awayIs it a modern "smart" battery charger?
