Japlac

I have used brush applied red oxide primer (2 coats) on a small fabrication then Japlac made by International (3 coats), again brush applied. I have rubbed down the Japlac with 400 grit wet and dry between coats but cannot get good coverage. I am using a good brsuh (Purdy) and painting outside in good weather. The paint seems quite "draggy". Can it be thinned? If yes, what with?.
Is there something better? I don't have a compressor or spray gun.

can be thinned with white spirit .do a test piece on some spare material to gauge viscosity and quality of finish

400 gritt seems a little rough between coates japlac also suggests 6 hours between coates i have just looked at the data sheet for it and there is no mention of a thinner

a tip on hand painting is put the can of paint in a tin of hot water this thins the paint without thinning the pigment

Thanks Guys. I have been leaving well over six hours between coats. I like the idea of heating the can up a little with warm water. I used to do that with old spray cans years ago but had forgotton about the idea.

Thanks Brightspark. Applied fourth coat today with the can heated up in a bucket of hot water. Much better than before. I now have the best protected grinder pedestal in Cornwall!

my mates old man did that with an aerosol in a pan on the stove after a while it went bang and everything was metalic brown he didnt see the funny side of it like the rest of us

i said put in a tin of hot water . not boil it on the stove like an egg

Huh, better take that rattle can off the radiator then........only bin 10 mins or so makes the paint go on nice though, LOL

I stand arseole cans in warm water in the sink for a few minutes, they don't need to be really hot
