3D Scanning

I do a fair bit of reverse engineering as a sideline so thought I'd invest in a 'hobby' 3D scanner. I'm pretty impressed with the results so thought I'd share...

Here's the subject, its the 'A' post region of a Triumph GT6 - same as a Triumph Spitfire and similar to the Hreald/Vitesse. The door hinges bolt to the triangular bolt patterns...



...and here's the 3D scan...

What's amazing is the level of detail - this view shows the spot weld depressions well...

That's the Revopoint POP 2, results would be better with some post scan cleanup.

That's worked out really well! Do you have to be really careful with shiny materials and certain colours? I've seen people talk about how the hobby scanners are quite particular about what they can scan

Yes it's pretty fussy on material finish, matt white is ideal, black and mirror surfaces a no-no.

You can get a spray which leaves a white powder finish ideal for scanning and disappears after a few hours

Yes, I saw a demonstration of that a few weeks back. The chap waved the phone around the front of a car, and it rendered it very quickly indeed. Requires a reasonably high-spec iPhone, I believe.

It's called polycam.
I refuse to use anything made by Apple but daughter got some decent results.
I managed to import it into blender, triangulated mesh (obviously) so any additional modeling is a pain if needed.
Some interesting scenarios came up though, as in what's to stop you scanning bronzes or sculptures in a museum?

At least that's what I read when I was looking for something to run on Android. Unfortunately that feature isn't available on Android yet

Yes, that's what I was told. Reasonably modern (i.e. not £20 yet) iPhone, look for three lenses on the back.

I did one of a bootfloor from a car I want to restore. Then imported the file into CAD. Was more than a bit disappointing when you actually start measuring things to find out whilst it may look to be an exact scan, dimensionally it’s way off.


When it is scanned the scanner needs to be held at a constant fixed distance from the panel and it needs to be kept at 90 degrees to the part otherwise it introduces assorts of anomalies in the scan…Well, that was my experience of trying it.

The white spray that you use for crack detection with dye works well, it’s like a dry powder. Easy to clean off when you are done

Some interesting scenarios came up though, as in what's to stop you scanning bronzes or sculptures in a museum?

Why should they stop you?

What stops you taking pictures in an art gallery? Or rocking up with paints and an easel? It's not illegal to replicate artwork, as long as you don't try to pass it off as original.

Why should they stop you?

What stops you taking pictures in an art gallery? Or rocking up with paints and an easel? It's not illegal to replicate artwork, as long as you don't try to pass it off as original.

Firstly, they do stop you.from taking photos in a lot of galleries and scanning will become a real no no because there is nothing stopping you taking your Henry Moore scan to an unscrupulous foundry and getting it cast.
You can of course scan the original, using the same technology, and map, not only vertex, but the bronze composition, so not all lost.
I'm more getting at the creative process and how that will manifest in the future.

If a gallery can stop you getting a quick pic of a painting, they can definitely stop you getting hundreds of pictures of a sculpture from all different angles for your photogrammetry software.
