Instinct! Plus the camera eye view is above the drivers view, he may think the disk brakes are still on the car allowing some steering.

Now forgive me if I'm just a big girly girl, but the wheels coming off at the best part of 200mph would have my foo foo valve glued to the seat.

If you watch right to the end, you can see the amount of kinetic energy the wheels still have, the LHS one bounces right over the catch fencing

At 200mph those F1 cars have so much downforce that the car was pushed down to the ground even further when the wheels fell off! So it is a case of just skidding to a halt- apart from the bash into the armco. Don't forget though, no1 quality needed to be a race drive is to have no fear whatsoever!

just goes to show, safety critical parts should not be made out of carbon fibre, which is one possible cause I heard.

The other point is now he is starting from the back of the grid, and changes are not allowed to be made after qualifing, what is he going to do?
Do they start him one lap behind or ten in front to account for no front wheels?

All I know is I have never seen dual front wheel failure like in F1 before, and hopefully never will again.

They are being forced to use ally for the uprights these days, presumably part of the cost reductions. Used to be Ti castings or fabrications or MMC, some of the regs here uprights are at bottom of the page
