Cuprinol, creosote, or ? For post/timber protection

I've just had delivery, a load of wood

For posts, to support fence panels
Fence and posts
Gates to span a 9ft gap
And a smallish shed

I've read a few things on here and other places (Google). It's been years since I done any fencing.



I've read to use bitumen on the bottom of the posts for protection?

Is Cuprinol better or worse than creosote

Any other recommendations?

Genuine creosote for me. Forget the substitutes they are useless. Stand ends in bucket of creosote for several days.

Creosote, no question.

for 3" x 3" I stand them in a blanked off length of 100mm soil pipe for a couple of weeks. 4 x 4 needs a piece of 150m pipe.

but soak as long as possible

the tar is used to keep the creosote within the timber or stop it bleeding out into the soil

Just a word of caution - I wasn't very impressed with the last batch I had from them - I suspect they have cut with 50% or more old engine oil.

You can get it from farm supply shops /agricultural suppliers . Hope your not too close to your
Neighbours as it will stink the place out until it dries . Wear proper rubber gloves .

i was getting genuine creosote for 28 quid a drum of 20 ltrs last year all i do is stick the posts in a bucket of the stuff for a week with added engine oil and my posts have been in 40 years just re coat every 3

Forget the creosote, horrible dirty stuff (though admittedly effective)

Postsaver sleeves then paint the rest with a paint with a wax content, I'm a big fan of ducksback.

Sika wood preserver if you want belt and braces.

Fence at my old house is 15 years old and the only post prep I did was soaking the posts in fence paint.....

it serves 2 purposes scrotes wont climb over it or lean on it so they dont hang around outside a bit of copperslip on top stops them climbing over as well

no just live in an exposed place on my own next to a station and a school playing field and without the protection kids take a shortcut through my property but due to all my security theres no chance they take one look and just walk past

I heard before that the 5 year guarantee is only for the colour, not the lifespan of the timber. No idea how true it is

That law says not to use it on things people will come into regular contact with, such as garden furniture but ok on fences and gates.
I use it regularly in a farm environment and nothing else is good enough as we are low lying and regularly flood once or twice a years when the local river (Brede) over tops it’s banks. So posts go into permanently damp soil. Barn sidings get sprayed with it every couple of years..

At the risk of opening a can of worms, what PPE do you use when you spray it? I considered spraying my fences but bailed out as I wasnt sure what mask filters would be correct etc.
