my comp got infected last month i had mcafee antivirus installed .it had run out the day before .quite a coincidence realy as i hadnt had any virus attaks in over a year .a warning came up you have 50 viruses on comp some antivirus firm came up. cant remember who. it had overwritten mcafee so i couldnt use it next came send your credit details and sign up for the year and clear the infections RIGHTO SENT EM STRATE OFF NOT THE ONLY THING THEY WOULD CLEAR IS ME BANK BALLANCE

I`ve just had all this hassle. The "program" came up as vista antimalware 2010, the actual application is ave.exe. It`s a royal PITA to get rid of as it tries to stop all programs, and therefor antivirus running. All fixed now thank god.

First off, I'd do a clean reinstall just as a precaution. There are still oodles of ways to defeat anti virus software and get around firewalls and other security measures. And as for Windows. Asking Microsoft to look after your internet security is like asking Gary Glitter to look after your kids. It's just not fit for purpose.

Sounds like a similar scam.

It was a proper PM with the link in it. I've had a couple of PMs from the same site (Trellian Webpage) like this:-

Which I reported to Trellian admin but got no response.

About AVE.EXE, it can exist as AVE3.EXE and so on, so if you search for it on your PC search for AVE*.EXE

That is why it is recommended to anyone concerned about internet security to get rid of the windoze PC and run a Mac!!!

Viruses, malware and *.exe's do not work on a Mac it simply rises above all that stuff.

Sure you all know this but a reminder. If anyone gets a popup telling you that you are infected with anything, remember not to tick any yes/no button or the window close button.

It's Control+Alt+Delete you need to do. Then kill your open browser from there. Any other way, you die. Clean cookies and cache too.

Just to echo what's been said here really.

Pretty much most 'bad' stuff sits in the background so you don't know about it, logging key depressions and such like, we use a combination of tools, but the ones you don't have to pay for: CCleaner, Spybot Search & Distroy, Adaware, Tuneup utilities, we're an AVG partner so also use Internet security. (a pretty good offer on the AVG website at the moment too)

I'd look at moving away from Internet Explorer too if you use that, I'm a fan of Google Chrome & Firefox.

Not actually strictly true (IMO) it's just a case of the people who write the virus, malaware etc targeting the largest part of the market which is windows on PC's - if macs were the dominant player and windows and PC's were the small fry Macs would be the ones to suffer most
