One of my best mates younger brother has gotten him self an apprenticeship with the roads lighting department in the highland council as a sparkie.

Put together a wee present for him out of tools I had lying around and was going to sell and an old tool box I got when I bought an old truck mechanics tools.

Chucked in a few new goodies for him too.

Personally I don't carry uninsulated grips and pliers, screwdrivers etc in my work tool bag, It only needs a second of inattention to pick them up and use them in a live panel ...
Street lights are usually live when worked on as far as I know.

Generally they are shut off not live. Though I agree don’t want to be teaching him the very bad habits of the marine industry.

Streetlights have a 30A cut out fuse in the base of the column or in an external box if wall / pole mounted

Hey be careful guys you are talking about one of the first towns in the whole of the uk to have electric street lights and an electrically light foot ball pitch.

I know but they normally don't turn the supply off if just a bit of maintenance is needed at the top of the post so the cut out is still live at the bottom and non insulated tools in a tight space =

Some of these companies (maybe not the council though) provide vde gear which must be used and I believe its date stamped so thrown away and replaced after a certain period.

Yes you are right. I did a weeks work experience while I was at high school with them which included a day with the roads lighting department. They all get their own tool box and set of tools but they aren’t allowed to take them home.
