Broken down due to a diesel filter

Anybody ever broken down with a common rail diesel following a diesel filter springing a leak? Filter let go yesterday painting a three inch wide strip of diesel three miles long down the road. Emptied half a tank of diesel in the process. Funnily enough it didn’t affect the running but the fuel consumption was frightful . No visible hole in the filter,but pi$$ed out when running. Luckily got flagged down by somebody behind me. Filter runs at 6 bar and was replaced last service in January. All hard piped in, not leaking on connections, but leak massive when pump running that you couldn’t pinpoint the leak, apart from definitely the filter. First time in 30 years of driving I broke down on the road…

Had one go on a Cummins made a right need.

This one split as it has been tightened incorrectly by the last guy

This has push on fittings. AA replaced filter and no more leak. No engine lights on. Drives fine, but did anyway even when it was giving the road a antirust treatment

Yep, I’ve had one go on a 110. It was wet and the road was like a rainbow behind me!

Had my only brakedown in the 11 years I owned my Discovery 2 due to fuel filter. It was leaking from the plastic water drain on the bottom of the filter, again, spraying diesel over the road for miles. Fortunately I was dropping my son off at the inlaws when I noticed it. Went to tighten the drain screw and it snapped off completely dumping the contents of the filter onto the road. Borrowed FIL's car and bought new filter, went home and picked up tools and replaced it. Strangely positioned fuel filter on Td5 Discos and Defenders, on the main chassis rail behind OSR wheel, always thought they'd be very susceptible to damage there, especially off road. I believe the Defender had some sort of shield around it but the Disco definitely didn't. Wasn't ever a problem other than that one incident but I can just imagine a stone puncturing your diesel filter miles from anywhere on an off road adventure, it would be game over unless you had a spare.

Had a Mondeo what would only leak when the engie was running. The holes was at the bottom, on the bend of the water bleed screw.
Holes in filetrs are a common thing now, due to poor QA.
A friend who runs a garage has at least one a week.

I can't share the pictures company policy, this thing in question dumped about 80l of diesel before the driver noticed.

Maybe on a suitable bike, but not this.

A week ago a car seemed to have dropped its sump plug and left a streak of oil 200 yards long down a back lane near my place. Oddly enough, it turned into a local DVSA yard,and stopped immediately inside the gate. Nice man put sand on the oil outside the gate, but not on the 200 yard long streak. I could still smell engine oil days later when I rode past.

All I can say is thank God for the guy behind me flashing his lights. Didnt smell diesel until I stopped and wound down the window, and car was pulling strong,so no sign of anything being wrong

I did hundreds and hundreds of miles green laning and off roading. If the filter was vulnerable then you had done something stupid, well out of the way of rocks and branches imo

It's the same as the people who say drilled and grooved discs collect stones, never happens, some folk just like to think of the negatives first

I lost an entire tank full of red diesel from my JCB 803 excavator due to a diesel filter. It's positioned on the rear off side similar to Discos and at a lower level than the tank. The filter / water separator froze over night even though inside my tractor shed and the expanding water cracked the plastic bowl. Memo to self - go check the water in that filter !!!!!!
