Welding upside down

[OUCH! That's hot!]

Spent the morning welding my LR 109 repairing a small section of the main chassis. Some of you will know the pleasures of welding upside down, I spent many years in the motor trade doing just that but haven't had to do any for years now since I had the sense to get out before everything went computers.
Well, today was a rude reminder of one of the more unpleasant aspects of auto body welding and as I am so out of practise the result was not to my satisfaction. I was wondering..., have any of you found any good ways of welding upside down, any tips at all?
PS. Now you know why my name is... OUCH! That's Hot!

Up the wire speed a bit, move torch a bit faster.

Keep torch close and a bit more of an angle so spatter does not lug it up.

Stay out of the way and remember most inexpensive masks are not rated for overhead welding.

i once watched my nrighbour welding under her van in a rather fetching rara skirt with a sequined top.

We did laugh when she set her top on fire, impressed that she ignored it, and have seen the long term scar on her belly.

Wear the right stuff, and get your setings right. I would guess practice the settings in a safer environment prior to getting under the vehicle.

All good advice Shenion, thanks, I think the thing I need most is to get back in practice. BTW, I have an Esab Origo Tech helmet, not the best available I know but should be ok, I didn't know however that some masks weren't rated for overhead welding.

Chunko: ...?... I think your neighbour is my kind of girl, have you got a room to rent in your house? As to what I was wearing, I suppose full evening dress was not quite appropriate but my leather apron kept most of the sparks off me.

Yes, takes practice. I also find I need different settings than what I am used to. Don't do it that often. Sometimes it is perfect, others I reach for the grinder

It wasn't too formal, it was only black tie. I never go over the top.

I was welding in my t shirt last summer cos it was too hot but i remember the nice tan i got where my welding sleeve didn't stay up...i still have the mark! (and no, pedro...no photos either...)

I can imagine!!!! Ive had the ear sparks and also down the butt crack! yes it smarted a tad,luckily no lasting damage

Bet it's a fast way of shaving yourself!!

Nah, the only thing that catches fire occasionally are my trousers...when they start to wear out just above my boot, cos that's the place where all the sparks seem to land! Hehe, monkey dance time!!!

No my boots aren't open MK, i never tuck my trousers in my boots either...it's just a fold in the fabric where they rest on my boots, my trousers are a tad too long!

Well, i usually don't have any trouble but since most work trousers and overalls etc are made for men....they don't fit very well on my female goddess like body...

Laying under one of my vehicles, one hot summers day a few years ago I was merrily welding.away, when a stray fizzer shot off and landed on my jeans, and promptly burnt through, right onto a certain part of my anatomy. I still hold the world record for getting out from under a car.

The pain is gone but the memory and the scar remains.

My second attempt, it may not be beautiful but if you saw my first attempt which I cannot bring myself to photograph and certainly not to post here... In any case, thanks to all who helped with good advice, I am improving, I found a way to make myself more comfortable involving a tyre and a cushion and this alone made a big difference.
