You can get a fault current upto 6ka on a domestic
It will be done by an electrician. Its an integral garage that's part of an extension with a new bedroom above the new garage. I just wanted to know what to specify on the plans. Maybe I'll just ask the architect to make a note on the plans that there needs to be heavy duty power supply for the garage. I can then discuss it with the electrician. I dont know who the electrician is yet as the job will be going out to tender.

if its an integral garage u dont need a seperate consumer unit fitted
sockets will be fed of the ring main to new extension just ask for a dedicated 30 amp suply for the welder socket. mcb can be down rated if necesary

If you make sure that the building reg's drawing has ALL the electrical points (lights sockets etc ) included,then the building control will be responsible for inspecting the work and the electrician will not need to register it. This is the law but most people do not realise it. If the garage is integral then I'd get the sparky to put a RCBO on the new ring main and another on a seperate 16A (BS4343) supply for the welder ( BLUE industrial plugs) and you will be sorted! and you wont trip the whole house out / kill yourself if you do something silly!

Geting building control is expensive and not needed if ur spark is registed my buijing control charge £191 plus vat were in the contry do u lile people might be able to recomend

if i was doing the same i would spec
6 Way CU with RCD main switch
to 32A radial circuits with lots of sockets (you can never have to many) count up how much kit you will have plugged in and double don't for get radio, kettle, beer fridge.
Then dedicated supply's for big stuff like welders etc
The lighting i would take off the existing house circuit (general lighting at least) then if out trip the RCD you are not going to go into darkness extra lighting could be provided off the second CU if needed
