The shock had made me jump and fall backwards off the stool, hitting my head and knocking me out. Since then, I have learned about safe isolation, bought all my own gear to test and got qualified in electrical test & inspection. Oh and since that day I have never trusted anybody when they say 'its safe mate'. It taught me to be self reliant

Can't remember the last time I used a pin spanner to undo the standard nut - usually enough left of the disc to grab and undo. After I've made sure I'm nowhere near the switch . . .

Same.... flap discs are no problem.
Worn out cutting discs are harder, but if it's worn out I just tap it on an edge and it frees up and spin it off.

I find the quick nuts to be a real pain in the backside tbh. A 9" that's bitten when cutting something still locks the nut up tight. Because there's no holes you can't just give it a tap round with a punch so easily.

I've got to admit to not doing this, despite being as safe as I can be elsewhere. I'll take it as lucky that I haven't had any stupid accidents so far and start unplugging from now.

Wake up call for me came when I used to usually leave the grinders plugged in and turned on. Usually I just grasped the old disc firmly in one hand, pressed the lock button, twisted the disc undone. They were rarely tight enough to need the spanner gadget.

The one time of note, I grasped the disc, pressed the button..... or rather I pressed the trigger.... and as I did it I thought "Damn, this is gonna hurt" and braced myself to lose some skin and bone. Its surprising how much can go through your mind in a split second....

But I had switched it off at the socket that time.

And I do every time now.

How many of You have used ether to start an engine? I have been for around 35 years. We have a 2 cycle Lawn Boy 4 HP (only?) push mower. It would not start so I gave it a taste of ether. Pulled the rope and evidentally it did not just fire , it detonated. It pulled the rope out of My hand and made it go numb. The rubber handle visciously recoiled and hit My hand on the handle. 1/4" high blood blister in around a minute. This picture is 2 weeks old. The hematoma went around 1/2 of My hand. Never heard of it.

'Familiarity breeds contempt'. I still have to remind myself to turn off angle grinders at the mains, when changing wheels. Or to take the chuck key out of the lathe chuck unless I'm actually using it. It so easy to slip into slack habits over time.

That's what I always thought; nobody is daft enough to accidentally pull the trigger.....

While grinders are powerful that power comes from rpms. I dont think they have a great amount of start up torque. If you have it firmly grasped at 0 rpm it may hurt, but unlikely to do damage before you either get hand out of the way or release trigger.

Says me... with a golf ball sized abrasion on my wrist, from being careless with the die grinder/tyre ball and my aim last week... holding work against my arm and ran off the end

Having two... This usually means swapping the disc on both. Twice as much swapping! Sometimes I want cordless and other I want mains power..
I could get a new disc out but I like to just have one of each in use.

The disc is geared down from the motor about 5:1 or more, so the motor has quite a bit of torque, and that comes in instantly, as with electric cars.

An old saying drummed into me from years ago. "Plug in pocket, not in socket" still use it for angry grinders, no matter what size.

When rebuilding daughters Honda civic inner wheelarches, head in helmet, all the way up, managed to sit on one, it started. Never have I moved so fast. Went in the house to ask Mrs MM to check the damage - cut throgh jeans, pants and just a little but cheak, phew...
When doing the 18th edition regs a couple of yrs ago the instructor (who still did sparkying himself) asked the room hands up who'd had a mains belt? Everyone put their hand up....

MY current grinder, where you hold it at a nice point of balance, upside down so you can get to the disc with the other hand, the switch is right under the bit between thumb and finger . . . slight movement of grinder and . . .

You have imposed your views before, no radio while driving, no earphones on motorbike. Crawl back under your rock.

Either way, its not spinning up with the spindle lock and that is how it should be held for disc changes, by the head with the lock pressed in.
Unless its a very poor design as @bricol 's appears to be, you'd need a third hand to switch it on, its noy going to happen.

Going back to this post.. you unplug grinders, but you have to remind yourself not to leave the chuck key in?! In that case its the lathe you should be unplugging.
