silverline grinding discs

I suppose the name says it all complete rubbish or am i missing summit.
Got a pack of ten rather cheaply late last year only started using them in the last few weeks as you see the the pics they seem to lose there grit so to speak and start to glaze over,the one on the left is the newish one with about 10 mins of work,however the on the right is what happens after about 20 mins work just looks as though its melting sort of thats where you start using extreame pressure on the old grinder(as we all do of course),but to be honest with these i'd be better of filing the welds back.

So can anyone recommend a good disc that rips like hell but dont wear out as much?

That looks like it's full of underseal. I use 80 grit fibre disks on a backing pad, they give a much nicer finish and are more controllable.

underseal...................yer i know what you mean there and your right it does,but tbh its just normal metal grinding thats caused that

The one on the left looks like it has no resin holding together, whilst the one on the right looks like the resin has been 'cooked' and smeared on the working edge.
Are the disks still 'in date' as they do have a use by date, due to the nature of the resin, and finally how have you stored them? if they have been in a cold damp shed it could have an effect on their performance.

No they are made by silverline, I think they use cheese to make them. Avoid.

I admit i havn't used silverline sockets or discs ,but use their h/d pipe wrench , at work in favour of record stillsons ,i find them good value ,also have 24v drill ,combi square and a few other bits ,so far i'm impressed,did you return the sockets Paul? aren't they lifetime gaurenteed?

I don't remember buying the silverline socket set, so couldnt really take it back. The sockets got thrown in a drawer and are the first to be used for welding bits of allen keys into, welded to nuts etc!

we onl ever use fibre backed discs at work as are easier to control and do job faster.

Ha Ha ......tools breaking are not a huge problem for me as most places i've worked will replace broken kit,so buy cheap and replace expensive Facom for draper.lol.....its no secret i have aldi air tools at home ,for diy projects ,and so far have had no major problems ,,but i wouldn't buy there hacksaw blades or discs ,or from silverline !,but so far silverline hand tools have been up to my jobs!,it would be intresting what other people have broken and wether they used the lifetime gaurentee? did the replacement last any longer .I have some Halford spanners and sockets but was disapointed their gaurentee doesn't cover ratchets or moving parts..Drills taps,blades and discs i wouldn't expect silverline to be that good ,but i would have thought if they offer lifetime gaurentee on say sockets they would be of reasonable qaulity?

Look well glassed over mate. Dress the glassing back with some stone (bauxite is ideal), problem seems to be not giving 'em enough welly The old discs don't take the gentle approach, need to break down during use. Used 9" x 1mm () cut-off discs years ago, and if you don't use them hard and keep the edge clean, they glass-over and break - embedding themselves in your face/your roof/other anatomy. Look like the wrong grade wheel for the job to me - the welding folks will lay into me if I'm wrong
PS If it's not p*ss*ng sparks off, it needs dressing

never again will I buy cheap sh*t, its false economy.
I bought a silver line variable speed drill ,unless its in high speed the ****** would stop as soon as you put pressure on it any way it decide to burn itself out.grinding stones and pads don't last. the pads after about a minute griding that's it.grinding stone I've never seen so much dust as these when grinding. f**king useless.
I only buy decent makes now. learnt my lesson!

I have some silverline spanners, from 24 to 38mm inc and I have had no problems with them at all, even to the extent of doubling them (ring in jaw of spanner on nut/bolt) to get extra leverage.
And no problems to report, actually the tools I have the most problems with is sealey mostly what has been bought is crap and I avoid like the plague, the rest in my box is halfords pro, laser, draper expert, britool, ck, a few snap-on and teng.
Apart from the few bits of snap-on stuff which has come cheap at boot sales, most of it has been bought new in the last 15-20 yrs and apart from a few of the ck sockets cracking due to severe abuse (these are the oldest) so these are the first to recive the breaker bar and scaffold tube treatment on stubborn fixings.
I only ever buy 6 point sockets, after learning the hard way with 12 point and cutting my wrist open when the dang thing slipped and spending half a day in A&E and 6 months off work.

The silverline stuff is just cheap rubbish.

I tried their thin belt sander belts (air file type). They last about 5 seconds before snapping (at the same speed I used with better quality ones). If you put them on the opposite way they are supposed to go then they last longer, but they still snap before they are anywhere near worn

To be fair i have purchased two Silverline 115mm angle grinders at just over 12 quid a pop. I use them for grinding fibreglass in boat repairs, this is hours of heavy grinding & it dont matter how good the tools are they all die when they are choked with GRP dust & fluff, the first one went 6 months before it expired the second is still going strong, just blow it out with the airline once a week.
At the price they are just chuck them in the skip & buy another.

I think we are agreed ,silverline abrasives are not good ,without trying to hijack the original post ,i'm still interested in others experience using the hand tools ?....Keith did you keep the receipt and try for a replacement for the angle grinder ?.....not impossible to buy a 3 angle grinder (for the receipt) and get the dead grinder replaced .......anybody had anything replaced under lifetime warranty on hand tools or 3 years on powered tools?
