I only buy budget on the fleet, they are normally kerbed or punctured to death long before they are worn out. I am with @premmington, I just roll along with the the trucks.

Exactly that - I had some new tyres one end of my old Pug 106 - I thought I'd done something completely wrong with removing and reinstalling the back axle as it would slide at the back at very moderate, old man, speeds in the wet. Moved them to the front and the front would let go similarly easily, and as for stopping . . .
Finally realised it was the tyres when I put a set of cheap winter tyres on it, and it became a safe car again.

I put 10 ply tyres on all the work vans, they're not much more expensive but they're a hell of a lot better with the weight when you're loaded
there's loads of choice for transit tyres, for a while the only 10ply sprinter tyres I could get were continentals... but more expensive than I like but thought screw it and went with them
had 3 blow outs on sprinters with continental tyres... had to stop buying them - one tyre had only been on a week! very disappointed
whet back to 8ply till others were available
apart from those only ever had 1 blow out 15 years before that.... was on a van we'd only had a few weeks, I was going a bit fast down the M1 when front right corner blew out on me.... guess it was a crap tyre the van came with

I have just realised that my front tyre on the LT is getting thin, so it will be "interesting" to find out what they cost now.

I prefer a decent branded tyre from a manufacturer that I have heard of [or can at least pronounce].
About 20 years ago I bought a cheap 1.8 Sierra as a runabout, it was a temporary car, my wife was using what had been my car at the time. It had mot when I bought it but the tyres were about done. Not wanting to spend much money on it, it got 2 cheap new tyres on one occasion and 2 even cheaper remoulds another time. It was absolutely hilarious then to drive. You could drift it around virtually any corner from about 20mph upwards, wet roundabouts needed a good armful of opposite lock. Downright dangerous handling but an absolute giggle at the same time. Last rear wheel drive car I've had. [I'm much more mature now and prefer tyres that keep you pointing in the direction intended

I think most tyre manufacturers mass produce tyres in India and China. Michelin employ 6000 people in China making tyres.
I'm well inside the speed ratings.... transits are all limited to 70 (because the engines are junk and revving over 3k kills them pretty quick), sprinters aren't limited but they have better drivers :-o
I think most people don't keep a car long enough see much difference in tyres.
You cannot even guarantee that major brands are consistant these days.
I'm on my 5th Volvo V70 all of which have been T5 or D5. I've run a variety of tyres and they were probably cheaper end before I got my tyre changer/balancer. I ran some Federals on one of the T5 and they were pretty good. I've had 3 sets of Uniroyal Rainsport, first set were excellent, brilliant in the wet as expected. Second and third sets got pretty noisy when worn and were clearly going out of shape. Avons were reasonable too even though they were the cheaper end. Ran some Goodyears for a couple tours.Last few sets have been Yokohamas, grip well, wear evenly but you can tell the difference once the tread gets low but maybe I'm pressing on a bit.
I bought some spare alloys for VW Polo recently they had Michelins with almost as new tread, sidewalls were so bad you wouldn't run them on your mountain bike. I knew the tyres were knackered but it's not what you expect for what is probably the pinacle of tyre brands.

Depends on the tyre I guess. Just taken the tyres off the 6x6 wheels and they had a 23 year old date code on them. Looked brand new. Shame because they were banded it turns out (socking great big steel belt inside to stop the tyre coming off the rim) and 14 ply!
My JCB, dumper truck and mates backhoes and dumper trucks are only 12 ply at most.
Just wish they were they'd had some useful AT or MT tread on them.

I had an old LR rim with a 12 ply tyre on it and it was a total dog to get off and I have a tyre machine. If it had been new it would probably have been more flexible but there was no movement at all.

Their tyre machine only just managed it with a little bit of persuasion to help it.
Then their heart fell when they saw the banding. He'd only seen that on military vehicles and even then not that often.

Removed in 2017, I don't know when Avon stopped doing remoulds (or how old the carcase they remoulded to was).
