My favourite vice

Hi all,

I've got a 6" Britool vice, which could do with some new jaw plates.

A quick google only seems to bring up replacement Record vice jaws does anyone know if these are compatible?

The jaws are 20mm deep with the holes central
6" wide (obviously) with the centre of the holes 5/8ths in.

Ideally I'd like some deeper jaws - 30 - 35mm as these would be ideal for my vice mounted brake / folder. Does anyone know if taller jaws are available?

Or could anyone make some? they don't need to be serrated...

I've made them from gauge plate in the past, you can either leave them in the annealed state or harden them yourself with an oxy fuel gas set up and oil quench, gauge plate is also called ground flat stock.

buy the record ones. and re drill and tap the vice to suit the new jaws

The trouble is I'll never use anything as thick as gauge plate, and dont have the facilities to cut it myself, so buying even a small quantity would be expensive and wasteful. Two 6" pieces is probably offcut-size, rather than something you could buy.

I tell a lie - I have a piece on the bench drill - but no way of cutting it anywhere near accurately!

If there's no friendly machine shops nearby have a search on J&L industrial or similiar, should be short lengths of 'precision ground flat stock' available. Might be something the right size leaving just the hole drilling.

For what I need it for I think 30mm x 8mm flat bar would probably suffice.

Does anyone have any 6" + offcuts they want rid of for a few beer tokens?

Pieces of van spring leaf, cut to size with angle grinder with cutting disc. If you wish to soften to straighten and for drilling, heat to cherry red then bury in ashes or dry sand so it will cool slowly. Drill at slow rpm with engine oil to keep drill cool. Or how about pieces of old flat file done same way.

Right, that`s my next mini-project sorted; I have some railway locomotive leaf-spring stock to hand, so will cut, heat-treat and flatten out a couple of pairs of new jaws for my vice.

You're most welcome Debs, the jaws/cutters on my guillotine are made from old lorry springs

Britool are still very much in business , you could try asking if they have any ?

Looking at the new Britool vices they don't seem to have replaceable jaw plates...

I'll give em a try though
