Another strange one from Ebay

Had a message from a guy who supposedly wanted to bid on something I had listed. It ended yesterday. He said he had issues with his phone trying to bid at the end. Nothing untoward there. He messages asking if there is another way he can buy it. EBay is saying he is not a buyer. So what is he and how do they know? If he is a scammer known to them why is he still on there? So added best offer and told him to use it. Will see what happens next.

EBay is saying he is not a buyer. So what is he and how do they know?

If it was a normal sale that ended with BIN or him as a high bidder, he would be the buyer (and eBay will know that). It is legitimate for him to contact you in that case.

In this case, if the item ended unsold, no-one is the buyer. The person is just a random eBay user contacting you about the item, hence the warning from eBay.

I think the precise wording of their message ('a buyer') is to cover when you are selling multiples of the same item, and hence will have a number of buyers for that item - a buyer with ID X, a buyer with ID Y, etc. So it is unlikely to be a scam. eBay might state their message more clearly as "This user did not buy the item..."

Well, surprise surprise, EBay’s “ he is not a buyer” just bought and paid for it

The trouble is people only talk about ebay when it goes wrong, its fine most of the time but you dont hear about the good stuff

He hasn't bid on your item through eBay and is asking if there is any way he can buy not using eBay which will avoid their payment system. It's more of a risk for him than you as he will not be covered in case of a return.

Err, no. He had a technical issue . He bought it quite happily through eBay now. Moral of the story is don’t always expect the worst of people. He seemed genuine when he asked and my gut feeling was right.

Err, no. He had a technical issue

Err, yes which is why he had not bid through eBay and so was not yet an eBay buyer but he is sorted now so all good.
