Car trailer tyres

Hello, I have a big car trailer and it needs new tyres. The problem is, I think the current tyres are off a car. Should I get proper trailer tyres?

I do tend to tow quite heavy loads. The trailer must weigh around 750kg.

Do I really need trailer tyres or can I just get regular car tyres?

The current tyre I have is: 175/70 R13 82 T

Hi, Yes I would, because of the life they lead. Even when empty they usually end up bouncing around due to poor suspension damping. So trailer or van tyres.

Doesn't matter what they are sold as. As long as the load rating is correct.
Although If you are prone to kerbing it tyres with a reinforced sidewall band are available for trailers

cant help with the tyre question, but Im intrigued to know why someone would ask about trailer tyres on a welding forum as a first post.......goes to show that there may be more knowledge on the forum than than there is on Google

Building or modifying a trailer I’d guess

The load index of the tyre you have is 475Kg. You really need to know what the axle max load is before changing tyres.
Are the tyres not specified by the manufacturer of the trailer

Get trailer tyres but get decent ones. We’ve been running cheapo ones this last wee while, double axle trailer carrying a quad, they’re not lasting long. Never had so many punctures or tyres wearing so quickly.

Get good quality trailer tires! I ran light truck tires and blew one it tore the fender out the trailer. The side walls are heavier and this causes less heating at HWY speeds.

yep, trailer tyres all the way. One of our trailers got pressed into service to carry our medieval bread oven. It did pop a tyre, but no drama, (I was towing it, short straw) mate had built it from the remains of his first HA van. we worked out the tyres were 27 years old! plenty of tread on them though. I got both and the spare changed ASAP. Welcome to the forum as well.

looking around can't see any tyres with a higher load rating that'll fit your rims

Problem is a 82 load rating will only cover up to a certain weight
(475kg per wheel)

So 950kg 1 axle.
1900kg if a twin axle.

If your saying that the trailer is weighty in its own mind I would definitely look at proper heavy load trailer tyres.

If the trailer weighs 750Kg as per the OP's guestimate, that load index (950kg) doesn't leave much for a car or parts being transported. If the trailer doesn't have a data plate, the authorities will assume the maximum trailer weight/mass as being the load index of the fitted tyres, so it would be well worth fitting proper trailer tyres which should have a much higher load index and be a lot less likely than car tyres to let go at the most inconvenient time/place.

My dad has a small car trailer, 5x3 or thereabouts. It has mk2 ford escort wheels fitted including 13" michelin snow tyres. Now the last time we had a mk2 escort was 1987 and said snow tyres had previously seen service on a Morris Marina which was replaced in 1984. So those tyres are at least 38 years old

If its only a small unbraked single axle trailer normally rated for 750 kg fully laden then I would fit 8 ply van tyres.

Hi, He says in the opening post that it's a 'big car trailer', so all the more reason to have suitable tyres.

165R13 94/92 may be closer to what you need, and easier to source, on twin axle trailer

it may say mig welding in the name but I only have a stick and a tig welder

I put 195/50 r13 (104/101N) tyre's on my trailers they seem to last forever and never get punctures
