I just had a nose on there out of curiosity , first message.
Just a reminder that the forum will be offline until we've upgraded the software and migrated to a new host.
We've come across some technical challenges but working away trying to get the forum back online again.
I'll keep this post updated.

It is becoming increasingly common for online communities to offer logins via Facebook and/or Google. A very large number of people are members of Facebook and Google and they find this a convenient way to authenticate - there is no additional password etc. In addition, there is often interoperability between them for sharing, likes and so forth.
It is an option provided by the community you are wanting to join (or log into) and it might be that the new and improved forum of which you are a member will offer this as a login option.
Generally, the old login is still available but is no longer the default so you do not need to be a member of Facebook or Google to log into your forum.

The forum in question already had a Facebook presence. It wasnt that popular. It seems they are trying to get all the old, non facebookers to use it.
The one or two facebook sites/groups that I have looked at are terrible. No history that I could find via my PC, no search worth a toss. Loads of blatherers. Not for me.
Can you imagine what this site would be like on Facebook. No thanks.
My other concern with Facebook is the amount of information they want about you to get a logon.

There are already several Facebook groups for welders & metalwork. Some try hard to help newcomers but often there are resident experts that stomp on them. I realise that happens elsewhere as well but it seems to be prevalent on FB.

Do you mean the few people around who still have some common sense and steer well clear of sad book and it’s mind numbing content.
It was actually a statement of fact and no additional implications were intended.
I do use Facebook, I have no personal profile and I don't post what I last ate. I use it specifically to keep in touch with some family members and to access the few reasonable groups that cover my interests and trade information with them.
