very easy to do if you think it needs doing dont wait as the arcing of a worn brush can damage the armature.

Some are simple, some are a bit more involved. If they are the spring loaded type it's usually just a case of removing a plate or a screw cap, taking the old ones out and dropping the new ones in. Some have a wire and a spade connector with a separate spring which needs hooking out of the way while the brushes are changed, I just use a piece of bent wire to do the job.

You need to know the make and model of grinder. Some grinder manufacturers sell them or electrical repair shops for washing machines and appliances may have them if they are a common type. Try looking for carbon brush in google to find suppliers, I have had some from espares for jobs in the past. I don't usually change mine till they stop working, the spring tension no longer holds them down firmly enough and they stop making contact.

When mine needed doing it felt like the grinder was 'mis-firing' - it went really rough and lumpy as the brushes lost contact with the armature. I could also see lots or arcing inside.

I didn`t know about the arcing issue-point noted.(Also the RTB post, if i remove the brushes just to inspect and replace same ones)
I am assuming it is the brushes but have now started wondering if the bearings are ok. I`ve been using a wire cup brush (small correct size for the machine) and the machine sounds louder than normal. It is at it`s loudest when running free, but when i make contact (wire brush on metal) the sound distinctively changes and goes quieter. Does this indicate anything to anyone?

Wire cup brushes are noisy things, a lot of air goes through the bristles as they spread out and make a completely different noise to a wheel. Put some ear defenders on and keep going.

A guy at a place i worked at used to buy a new car every year or two. He once explained that if he heard a strange noise he just used to turn the radio up
The change in noise that i refer to is the machine noise (not from the actual cup brush). However, i am unsure if it is the motor part or the gear section.

I've only ever re-greased one of my grinders and I did that because I had it in pieces already. I also rubbed down the armature with some 1000 grit paper and cleaned out the slots. Two years later and it's still running fine.

We have a 115mm bosch at work and the brushes in that had an insert of either plastic or nylon embedded in them which stopped it working once they wore to a certain point. I would recommend you get the genuine ones.

I repacked my B&D grinder gearbox with HMP grease a few years ago when it started getting hot, still running OK now, and a lot cooler!

HMP = High Melting Point, don't know if it's Lithium though, too dark to find it in the garage now

dont just put general purpose grease in gearbox its 2 thick and slows the motor down get the corect stuff its quite thin
