can you hang a radiator upside down?

I'm not a plumber but I've fitted a few of radiators of that type... the manifolds on the end were all set up to force water up through half the slats to the manifold at the other end and then back down the other slats

Should be fine upside down

Cast iron rads used to be inlet at top , outlet at the bottom , schools were always that way !

Indeed, but if the radiator is placed lower, the cold air will be being drawn in from lower, too, so the bottom layer of room air is less cold, as it will be being drawn up by the convective effect at the radiator, and replaced by warmer air circulating across the ceiling and down the far wall.

Good point. Ideally that water powered under floor heating must be best.

My sister had it done with electric underfloor heating, in her kitchen and conservatory. She used it for a while, it was great, warm feet.... then she saw how much it was costing..... and she never turned it on again.

My parents first new house, 1970, had it too, and they never used it as the cost to run it was criminal, even back then.

These designer radiators are internally plumbed to work one way. Standard radiators should be cross flowed

Thermosyphon system to assis with the flow. Hot water is less dense so as the radiator takes heat from the water it cools, becomes more dense and flows downwards towards the outlet.

My dad was an electronics instructor in the RAF back then, and into DIY and all sorts, and he soon discovered our new house had no earth system. The main earth wire was just poked into a hole in the wall behind the main fuse board in the garbage. Even back then builders turned out some real cack work.

What’s on the other side of the wall the radiator is mounted on? Can you access the new rad from that side?

Failing that, can you run the pipes down in the l/h corner of the kitchen (box them in where they show) and out through the plinth to the bottom of the new rad?

on the other side of the wall is a water pipe and a large gas pipe and some surface electrics its do able but hastle

and if id have thought about it before fitting the tiles etc id have yes done it behind the cuboards but now it could be done there as there is space it would go in front the tiles and splash back and through the work surface (even if they let me do it that way i could not would just be such a carp job)

as said all of us make mistakes in this case just no forword thinking

yes as said before i think i like the idea of pipe work behind poss in chrome think an email to them confirming its not going to work then back to above

Have you thought about a plinth heater? You could run the pipes down the wall and into the plinth in chrome pipes and then in PEX (plastic) under the cupboards and place the heater under any cupboard. You will need power for the fan though. Nice warm feet in the mornings

I'll have a look but three of them have been in for a few years now. The last one was added to the lounge recently but I tend not to keep information on things like this unless I need to.

Please send a link, I have spent many hours crossing pipes for designer rads that specify orientation and flow/return connections, usually when the ones installed do not work. Some universal ones would make life easier

I have found an email relating to the last radiator purchased, it came from Trade Radiators.
Reading some articles online after a quick Google it seems that if they are directional they usually have stickers on to indicate flow direction. Mine had no such stickers or anything in the instructions regarding flow.
They heat up quickly and do what we want.

I did just this at my house. Fitted two vertical radiators upside down, fed from above. Year later I had absolutely no issues, even drained them recently to ad inhibitor but the water was crystal clear.
