I was looking forward to retirement

I was going to retire off to the sun this year at the tender age of 57 but No.1 Son has decided he wants to go to College. I guess the move to Spain will be delayed until he decides to be self-sufficient, or come with us. Hoping he comes with us TBH but it's his life.

I think it depends if you enjoy your job and if you're fit enough to carry on. Most of my mate's cannot wait to retire as they hate their jobs. I always tell them to change jobs even if it means earning less. You spend the majority of your waking hours working so do something you like.

My parents would have moved even with me at that age

It’s their life and If that happened I’d get an evening job in a bar and support myself. Hard but life’s what you put into it

Seems a horrible way to go and a downwards spiral of lower and lower quality of life until body gives up watching repeats of TV shows , I am sure I will have enough to keep me busy but can see how easy it is to just sit eat crap food etc which all makes it worse.

are u claiming your state pension as well . you can defer it and get the full amount back paid if u pack in later. if u dont claim it and snuff it its gone and wifey cant claim any of it

I retired two years ago when I was 60, wifey adopted a dog, COVID hit, didn't get my month trip around France on the bike nor Vietnam!
Wifey has said we have to spend some of our savings, so I've got the go ahead to buy a new mill
As long as the dog is OK, everything else will work itself out

Do not defer the State Pension. You will never get that money back. That was advice from the helpdesk at HMRC (unofficially).

Quite right also if you still have some years to pay for your full NI contributions to state pension it is not worth paying the last year's. Also from HMRC

i did it for a year and a half and claimed the full backpay and got it in 2 weeks after phoning them . as i said claim it when you can dont leave it as if u snuff it its gone

someone I work with retired today, after 20 years in the same office...... means he doesnt have to get up at 6am to wait in the snow for a bus to get him to work tomorrow.

I'm 55 in a month. Zero chance of being able to retire until what, 70? I'd love to go now. Pittance of a pension to come anyway. I was with Equitable Life!

I had a small amount (£3k ish) with equitable life and did quite well out of them, kept on getting a cheque for a hundred or so every so often then when they got taken over a few years ago my money got tripled.
I've also got 4 or 5 other pensions as I've moved jobs a few times and kept the pensions going, retirement in 15 years time.

Well…….the job bit I don’t care about if he comes with us. But if he decides to go to college then we have to stay and support him until he ultimately gets a job and his own place to live.
Meh, 2 more years won’t hurt I guess. Only son, means the world to us despite being a typical teenager

My Father just stayed at work - did less and gave up working aged 76 - because he hurt his Achilles tendon. He is 90 in sept of this year. Still driving/shopping doing his garden.

Dad keeps telling me to just stay at work....

Good for him. Glad he ‘s enjoying life to the full.
