Cordless Screwdrivers

I'm in the market for a cordless screwdriver. It will be used for stripping power tools & other electrical items for repair. I've got several cordless drills but even at the lowest clutch setting they over tighten the screws in the plastic casings. Also a cordless screwdriver is a lot lighter to use.

So it must have an adjustable clutch that goes down to low settings.
Variable speed would also be useful.
Needs to take 1/4" bits.
Use Liion batteries. Removable 18650's would be an advantage.

There are offerings from Makita & Milwaukee that fit the bill but are too expensive for me. There are many no name branded ones on Amazon, has anyone any experience of them?

I know quite a few of you work on computers, what do you use?

It works just as advertised with good feel as to how much torque you are putting into the fastener. Downsides: I have to remind myself to use it or I find myself reaching for the regular drivers, have a selection of tips to hand because it is a racing certainty the one you want isn't in it!

"Cheap as chips" I use these for stripping trim on cars. But I think the clutch setting will be too high torque for your application.

Your expectations may be higher than reality can provide. Especially on used stuff, the torque needed for reinserting fasteners is not clear cut and can vary from one to the next even if identical. For tightening, there really is no substitute for the calibrated grip of the right hand that you have been perfecting since the age of 13.

That said, this one popped up on a search: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sealey-STS104-Torque-Screwdriver-Digital/dp/B074KR6VG5 . For standard socket sets, you can buy the torque limiting extension bars. I could not see any in 1/4" hex. form but it might be worth looking. Also look at gunsmithing tools (e.g. Brownells) as that area of work has some exacting requirements.

I have the Milwaukee M12 screwdriver and it is great to use with very long battery life even on a 2ah. It’s not a big seller so prices aren’t discounted for them.

Never thought to look in screwfix, that seems to suit my needs, gets good reviews & is cheap. I'll call in to screwfix, ask to see one & test what the bottom torque setting is like.

At my old job they had some Bosch 7.2V palm screwdrivers that worked really nicely. There were 40+ screws in the lid of one of the radios so they saved the cost of one due to technician time in a day and a half. They weren't dear I don't think.

Ive got two cheap ones, one from lidl. No clutch or variable speed but its not needed, its geared quite slow. It does bog down with bigger screws into wood but thats not really what its for. Its great for motorcycle fairing bolts which are at all positions with limited acess to turn a screw driver.
If buying another Id be after a smaller one for tighter spaces.. rather than other fancy features. Plus a bit holder.
Mine are similar size/appearance ro the mac allister linked above.

I've got these two, both pretty crap imo but they might do what you want.



The cRyobi has a clutch with 12 settings, but non removable battery and fixed speed. Fixed speed annoys me and it doesn't have enough torque for anything I'd want it for.

The Makita is an impact driver so has a bit more torque but still not much, essentially it's just noisier than a screwdriver. All I use it for is quickly winding out the jaws on lathe chucks. Again fixed speed, and no clutch but it looks like the new model does have one.

I have an ixo and the Mac Allister one that @mtt.tr linked to. The Mac is perfect for tiny screws as it has some torque settings, I use that a lot more than the ixo as that has very little control and I have stripped plastic mounts on electronic cases with it in the past!
