My diesel price on the fuel card next week is dropping nearly 30p/l. So pump prices should follow in a couple of weeks.

what are prices like with a fuel card?


I've always got places phoning up or sending me letters wanting me to sign up... when I looked years ago they were only really brought the motorway services price down to the pice asda etc. charge so wasn't worth it for me.... most drivers only use a tank of fuel a day so can fill up locally cheap in the morning, if they need more they can top up near their destination

Again, while it affects me badly too, why is it a surprise a business takes advantage of any and all opportunities to maximise profit?

With local smaller sellers - might take a week or several to empty the storage tanks. Even when I worked for THF, you might only get one delivery a week on a motorway service area in quieter periods of the year.

Because the logic is the tanks would be full with cheaper fuel. So price should remain low until they get the new supply.
Then put the price up but it all goes up overnight.
The reverse is rarely true.

The stuff that's already in the tank has to be sold at a price that will pay for the new stuff coming in.
Petrol stations aren't charities, and there's so little margin on a litre of petrol they don't take any chances of being caught with their pants down.
As far as the falling prices go - supply chain economics.
It takes a while for cheaper stock to get down the line to the forecourt. Of course there are some greedy sods in the chain but there always are.

Well, the petrol stations have had a bumper year this year haven’t they? The no shortage shortage saw my local petrol station selling a months fuel a week. Delivery every second week ment a two week holiday per month and still double turnover. Wish I could screw my customers over like that and still have a business… PROFITEERING at its best….

Simple business - charge what the market will support.

If the market panic buys and drives the price up . . . not exactly their fault was it?

If the market goes elsewhere and buys it cheaper . . .

Or, like me, the market simply doesn't use the car(s)

Its a business - in business to make a profit. I would expect nothing less than them to make use of every opportunity to squeeze the profit from 2p a litre to 2.5p a litre . . .

I can only assume you are still charging the prices you charged when your business started?

The other point to remember is that there is no competion now. Asda who usually started a price war have been bought out by rival fuel station operators.

i have a fuel card predominantly because i cant get my lorry in to the supermarket stations. i have a bp card through ukfuels and well..

Confused. That's just a cash flow issue.

If a litre of petrol costs 150 and the garage sells at 170 when the price goes up to 190 they have still only paid 150.

The argument is they don't put the price down of the fuel they have in their tanks. That they will pay 150 to replace.

They wait till they buy more to reduce the price.

Why does panicking drive the price up? The item is not worth any more or less.
Ok if the supply price changes the business needs to react.

We are not saying they can't make a profit, just making a bigger profit is profiteering.

They will be making a bigger profit as a % anyway as the price goes up.
Assuming their mark up stays the same.

Actually I am. I have absorbed the costs up to now,but I cannot carry on much longer. I don’t have the luxury of my raw materials going down in price so I can cash in, like you obviously can and do…..

That's the major difference between businesses.
A lot depends on if your business is labour or physical item heavy.
Prices/Profits are going to be different for each type of business.

yes its a business fuel card. but shock horror, the fuel company don't care that the business I registered the card to all those years a go as a sole trader no longer trades. they get paid on time so they're happy.

Any business charges what its market will stand - and it stood it as everyone rushed to buy, and keep buying, the last litre they could. I chose not to partake in most of the particular episode until I needed to.

Price at my local independent went up, as the price he had to pay to refill his empty tanks went up.

I guess common decency and morals can’t be taught. Everybody out to screw somebody out of their last 5p in the name of business. Hey ho. Each to their own. What goes around comes around. Seen it more times than I care to remember where greedy business owners cannot understand why they have gone bust, by having priced themselves out of existence by constantly screwing their customers over.

Exactly. A lot of people stopped using the local Garage unless we had to. When speaking to the owner one day I explained with social media all garages have to play fair or the consumers will remember....
