Currently Octopus energy, who I was swapped to when Avro Energy went bust, still have a standing charge in the 28p range.

On a variable rate that appears to be less than half the cheapest fixed deal I could find.

I think they're charging more on the unit price though? Seems to be swings & roundabouts with suppliers now.

Doubt we would get planning plus I hate them, what a waste of good land also there's enough industrial buildings they can smother the roofs with, another thing why aren't they putting them on all the new build houses it should be a requirement!

Said that for years @Blobber every new house should have a prefabricated roof including PV, and solar water + insulation, it can be craned on, price comes down on panel that helps time to completion, you off set the cost by not having tiles, roof trusses etc.
Down side the grid cant cope fully with the panel farms we have so

I like eccentrics. I invariably find them more interesting. You will have to bight the bullet and leave the pilot light on. There is also no need to turn the gas off while flipping a fried egg over. . However, going to bed 1 hour earlier every day can save 30 hours use of electricity for lighting every month.

I tried going to bed an hour earlier, but after two weeks I couldn't take it any more. I just couldn't get my head around going to bed at ten in the morning!

You cant eat trees…….on-a serious note your probably looking at 30 years to harvest your trees for wood. Then a year or more to dry it out.
Sadly wood powered steam through even a watertube boiler is going to be a grossly inefficient way to make your ziggies.

They can be mounted off the ground so sheep etc and wander underneath

Well, in a total reversal of the general trend…ish. It turns out Utilities wharehouse have been ripping me multiple new ones for the last year regarding mty electric bill. It’s gone DOWN by £27 a month for the next year due to their overcharging me. Gas has gone up though

I had a wickedly, sharp, jabbing pain in my a*****le yesterday morning,

And funnily enough

It was just after I opened my new, from April, gas an electric tariff, from British Gas

From an estimated £2400 to £3550 per year

Does it really make that much difference, switching everything off,
It should, the electric is not being used.
I'll have to do some testing, to see what electrical savings can be had,
Its not something I have ever worried about,
'That's just how it is',
Better late than never,
Time will tell.

My new standing charge will be £331 per year, that is ridiculous

Our fixed rate with Octopus runs out Sunday. Electricity only.
We will be going from £64 per month to a minimum of £133 per month.
Standing charge will only be going up by 4p to 24p. Unit rate from 16p to 36p.

Oh and despite me saying I wouldn't check oil prices, yesterday I discovered that my quote 4 days ago, has gone up from 78p to 98p per litre .....

EDIT: Reading the Money saving expert site it would appear that the hike in standing charges is in no small way to cover the costs of moving all the people whose supplier went bust.

Re nationalise the utilities. When energy and water are literally a nations lifeblood, that any other country or countries has any form of ownership or leverage over it is insane. There are of course a very few who get rich and the masses get screwed.
