Aldi air tools this sunday 14th march

I bought the air shears and cut off tool,tryed both today both worked well ,in fact i like the shears a lot ,i normally use 4" grinder or rotary sheet metal cutter which works well but can be a bit of a hand full on larger sheets .....clarke (MM)want £25 for cutoff and £52 for shears instead of £6.99 and £12.99 from aldi ,i can afford to take a gamble for £20 but not for £77 and like the previous poster replace later if needed ,and if they are not dust gatherers ,horses for courses ...Some of their stuff i wouldn't touch ,i am selective ,but am impressed with the air tools at the price ,for my diy needs....

yeah, plus they have a 3year warranty so as long as it isn't going to be really annoying if they go wrong I guess it's fine

I see the compressors and airtools now all carry a UK phone number and address for after sales support. Whether this means spares and warranty replacements will be feasible, I don't know. But maybe...

Got home and tried out my new air shears they were rubbish the trigger wouldn't work properly and kept sticking

went back to Aldi and the nice lady swapped it for another one

Take 2: plumbed it in and tried it on 20 swg steel, no problems at all

it's a cheap tool but it works ok for me

Picked up the shears today and I was impressed too, seem much better than the price would suggest.

ummed and ahhed about the cut off tool - would I use it in preference to grinder / dremel???? There were loads left though so maybe pick one up if they get reduced (from £7 - I know I know but I AM from Yorkshire!!!)

Looks like all the impact wrenches had gone, ratchets were left, but again would I use one more than a normal ratchet? Same with the drill - do they have any more torque than say an 18v cordless?

Got the ratchet and cut-off tool earlier.. will see if they work at work tomorrow.
Did notice that the supplied cut-off disk says 18000rpm max, while the tool says 20000rpm free speed

I went over yesterday and bought the air cut-off tool (best price I saw at Race Retro autojumble was £18), and on a whim bought the air shears as well. I guess the "up to 1.6mm" that they claim for the shears is probably aluminium, but then my mates "professional" shears don't like 1.6mm steel either. At the price, they're roughly the same as I've just paid for a replacement die for my nibbler.

I've had some stuff off them in the past. My bench drill is pretty good, has come in very useful for a number of jobs. My air drill sometimes sticks, I might get around to sending it back one day for a replacement. In fact I had more trouble with mundane stuff -I got a set of three G-clamps (or G-cramps, I suspect this is more correct) and one snapped, and I got a set of three files and the handle fell off one of them.

Edit: Wait, one obvious problem with the air ratchet, it's in a plastic case, as is the quick release adapter in it's own little clip in bit. When you screw the adapter into the ratchet, it doesn't fit in the case anymore! Probably why they are so cheap...

I have that problem with a Snap-On air ratchet !! Unforgivable on a tool that cost almost £200

An air ratchet has it's uses, quick disassembly is one of them. I had to replace a fender on my '69 Chevy. Involved removing the bumper, grill and a lot of bolts on the fender. With a regular ratchet I would have been there all day.

Picked up some shears - very impressive. not so impressive is the fact that after about a meter of cutting the things wont switch off

so back to shop tomorrow

impact gun stalls at 30ftlb of torquebut hey ho got some usefull 1/2 in drive sockets

its all a bit rough and the grippy rubber grips slide about as they arent bonded to the tool and there is oil and swarf and polishing grit everywhere

dont suppose the clarke stuff is any better for the money

I was tempted by the Aldi air shears but I was too late - they'd already gone. I wanted to cut out a metal grille for use in a MIG welder which I'm building, so I decided to use my old manual shears. The metal is about 1mm thick so it's a bit thicker than car body panels, and it's still very easy to cut with the manual shears, which begs the question - why on earth would I, or anyone else, need air shears for home use? I can see that a car bodyshop or industrial unit might use pro-grade shears day in, day out but nobody is suggesting the Aldi shears are designed for that. So what are they designed for? Is it simply a case of boys liking their toys? What will you use your Aldi shears for? How many metres of cut will you expect to do per year, and what of, exactly? How can you justify getting out a compressor and rigging it all up, just to cut a bit of metal? Are the cuts as clean, or better, than cuts with manual shears?

I find the shears allow me to do curves a lot easier and neater than with tin snips. Also my tin snips give a "pinking shear" edge to the metal, and they can distort the metal a bit at times

My compressor is rigged up 24/7 as the air blow gun is used every time I am in the garage for one thing or another

But I do like toys!
