as i outlined in my 110 cummins thread, I've recently acquired a new gearbox. the unfortunate downside of this is that it is a very slightly different ratio and therefore I believe the PTO unit I have will no longer fit. I would in an ideal world like to run the superwinch h14 hydraulic winch I have rather than go to electric. the new transfer box gearing isn't cut for running a rear mount pto either, which leaves me in somewhat of a pickle. I have a feeling a 12v hydraulic powerpack would run it, but unbearably slow ( these really are not fast winches to begin with)

I doubt a belt driven pump would provide the sort of balls the winch requires at full tug, but could be wrong?

other than this, any other ideas or suggestions or am i going to have to fork out for the correct PTO?

Could fork out for a correct pto or mile marker use to make a hydraulic winch that either took off the existing power steering pump or an extra one that was fitted in I believe the extra space for the second alternator on the Landry engines.

I’m sure there must be an auxiliary hydraulic pump for a Cummins engine as they usually have a compressor or sea water pump or some other ancillary type system pump driven by the flywheel.

Why does the ratio affect the PTO? The transfer box is normally run in Neutral. The only reason I can think of is they haven't bothered cutting the drive teeth or something on the gear set.

Are you going to winch so much that you genuinely need hydraulic?

5000lb Warn is pretty quick and plenty strong for a landy.

Normally I'd say a Defender would be coupled to a 9500lb+ winch before you put the Cummins boat anchor in.

The main benefit of hydraulic winches is they don't get tired (I.e. Hot) if properly installed so they just pull all day long. Not needed for self recovery really but my winch is used mostly for trees etc and not needing to cool down would be very handy and why I'm thinking of it

5k lb wouldn’t pull the old girl out of bed, and she will be doing occasionally duty removing bits and pieces of tanks , so hydraulic would be good

Normally they couple of the back of the compressor

The 0.9 input gear isn’t cut for a pto drive unfortunately

I have done rather alot of winching,I have a 14ton hydraulic on the Mog. But to be honest preffer double purchasing a 5k electric.Horses for courses I guess.

Are you going to put electric over hydraulic on it?It would be loverly with a remote control.

I worked in a Hauler ( yarder crew) for a few years. On a big day we would get 600 ton up the hill.

Hydraulics for proper work, electric for occasional use its a budget thing to as a proper Hydraulic set up takes a lot of space, but it's all down to duty.
I used to have a Leyland roadrunner that had a different modified crankshaft pulley so you could run two massive alternators, I remember it well as it was a new mod and it failed and went straight through the radiator! I do wonder if Cummins offer a solution we dont know about?
The issues I have seen with most non commercial hydraulic set ups is they can be slow.
With a 12v power pack you still have the Duty cycle as the few I have seen are made for occasional use and you would have quite a lot of losses.

That would work. You would end up with live hydraulics, not a problem if all the pipework and fittings are a tad bigger and free flowing.

It would but unfortunately it’s siting right where the power steering pump is i guess the answer will be to leave it for now and get the truck running properly then save up for a pto unit for the box. Had a quick look at some leccy power packs, they’d run it but be absolutely cripplingly slow

Use it as the power steering aswell with a priority valve?

Dan the pump @mtt.tr has shown has the two sections, one for hydraulics and the other end is power steering. Its the one to have.
