There is a 1-hour program on BBC TV at 9 p.m. tonight, Tuesday 22. February, about the fabrication and welding of oil platforms that began in the 70's oil boom at the marine yard in Nigg, Easter Ross, Scotland.

Pass by the area regularly, still plenty of rigs in the bay although now mostly for dismantling. Work with a guy who worked as welder fabricator there for a few years until in 2000 him and several other thousands of workers arrived one morning to be told that they no longer had employment. Told some stories of other fabricators who were a bit mental, including one guy dumping his bag of "herbs" over the edge of a platform and sneaking off site when they got wind of a spot drugs check .

No criticism implied just an observation, perhaps more of a comment on health and safety practices, looks like some of them like to get their fingers burnt!
