Replacement wooden double glazed windows

I plan to change these two single glazed windows with modern double glazed, I'll stick with wood as we are in a conservation area and although the house is not listed, we are supposed to get planning permission which I don't plan to do. I'll only go to uPVC if I run into price/availability issues with wood.

My preference would be to have the glazing held in with wooden beads rather than putty.

Anyway, can anyone recommend a decent online supplier where I can supply dimensions to get what I need?

Also any thoughts on wood vs uPVC?

Conservation Area? Clearly one window has been partially bricked up in the past? On the rear of the building.

The conservation nazis have only really got going in the last 20 years or so. Prior to that it was a case of anything goes. Half the houses in the street have uPVC windows. Now they won't even allow double glazed units into old frames in case some one sees a double reflection. Total joke when all my bedroom windows are uPVC, put in by the council in the 90s for the then disabled owner.

The windows in the pic are at the back of the house and are not visible to any neighbors.

Quotes from local joineries are also rediculous hence looking for an online suppliers.

The old windows are past their best so want to replace them rather than just putting in double glazed units.

your going to have to have a word they cant really so no when they state save energy fit insulation on your propertys

on the heritage it was discussed and agreed upon double glazed units could be fitted into the original wood frame units

but they had to use thin profile double glazed units like on buses just a little wider

its really a double edge sword we are all fighting on one hand they say save energy and yet on the other they say you cant fit upvc units in even though they save energy

the compromise is to fit them within wood units

race look into hardwood lining where soft wood is lined with hardwood all glued up of coarse

Then just do upvc. No one can see it and if anyone complains, you say it was already upvc, being replaced like for like, and point to the old coucil ones already fitted.

just put plaggy ones in its hardly noticeable . i changed mine on the front of house from sash windows to 6x4 hardwood ones up and down

get a price from this chap, he is making 7 up for me currently and in hardwood. They come unglazed but delivered . There is no vat with him so helps beat other prices. My local glass place recons £35 per glass unit

Old thread but... How easy is it to restore a sash window? Our windows are still in reasonably good nick but let in a bit of gale on windy days. We had a quote from https://surreysashwindowspecialist.co.uk/ to restore them and it was eye watering, just wondering if it’s a possible DIY job or no chance. I’m probably average at DIY and don’t mind working through them at a slow pace if it’s feasible. It would probably just be to get an extra few years out of them.

If you are reasonably competent in DIY, restoring Sash Windows is straight forward enough, experience might be you achilles heel.

But they are straight forward enough to restore and make more wind proof.

I hadn't missed that, why bother with wood effect if around the back ?, you mentioned wood effect, I was commenting on that.
