HGV reversing cameras

Recently had an articulated lorry reverse into the car in a car park. Driver completely oblivious to what was going on, doing a blind side reverse. Car was parked at the time and not in it. Drivers excuse being he can't see behind the lorry so all he can do is reverse (and I suppose just pray and hope for the best). Despite people shouting stop he continued. Whilst I'm no HGV driver and appreciate it is almost impossible to see behind the truck on a blind side reverse I'm not sure reversing on a wing and prayer is the best option. Alot of rigid trucks seem to have reversing cameras but don't see any articulated with them? Transport for London has introduced the "DSV" system to minimise HGV accidents, not sure why it should be London only?
But I've started the petition below for reversing cameras. At the end of the day were not in the 1980's anymore you can buy a reversing camera in middle Lidl for £50.

Alot of articulated lorries do not have reversing cameras fitted. It's impossible for a driver to see what is behind the vehicle especially on a blind side reverse. Resulting in many serious and fatal accidents.

dream on if you think that 50.00 camera will do for a artic wagon

as you want 3 cameras for start off

then the extension wires to them and another type of connection needed between can and trailer

some people have no idea whats involved with bigger wagons

Slight issue that trailers uncouple so you have to create a universal solution

As a guess, I'd say it is easier on rigids and probably more difficult with artics because they are interchangeable trailers which may not be owned by the haulier - i.e. you would have to have some uniform standard for all reversing cameras so that whatever kit is in the cab works with any trailer it could get coupled to. In any case, shouldn't he had a banksman?

Yes you would, trailers used to have 7 pin connectors for tow bars hence no reversing lights. But that was changed and we now have the 14 pin plug and socket. And guess what we now have reversing lights on trailers.

100% agree about the bank's person. But we live in a world where delivery are timed and everything is done in a rush.

From what I can tell is the standard has already been agreed. To enter London with a HGV over 12 ton you need a direct vision system permit. A camera system to eliminate blind spots. No permit and you can get fined

Yeah you don't want to get caught out in London with a non-compliant wagon. They'll fine you £100 just for putting a ratchet strap on a sheeting hook.

But that means gettting off your **** and possibly getting wet!

Just repaired a auto tailgate because he didn’t get out and check it had released before he tipped.

They only require Blindspot cameras. Rear view cameras arnt compulsory.
As said you would need a standard to be produced for the fittings before it became viable.
I don't know why companies like stobarts don't have them as all there kit could be tied together but to make it compulsory requires a lot of thought.
And where would your cut off line be for size.
Does an ifor plant trailer behind a wagon require one ??
Or the 750kg roller trailers ??

On a lot of sites you aren't allowed to get out of the cab, hence the use of air tailgate and easy sheets but more tippers go over now as you don't know if you're tipping on soft ground or not as you haven't walked on it .

Where I used to work all the c&u (44ton flats) had reverse cameras. Also the 12axle outfit I used had three cameras on the trailer and four on the truck I think it was. A lot of flats are starting to get cameras. Anything that extends is a bit of a faff trying to fit them to.

Sounds like just poor judgment. Not every driver is good. Like the guy I tried to help park today. He shall be known as zigzag

Kim that reminds me of reversing my small stock trailer up the ramp at the abattoir with (shall we say) lively fat pigs moving about onboard. Dead hard to keep a straight line !

Used to hate reversing the small chipper, you only saw it when it was going off course.

Used to back it along a 100m alleyway narrow enough that you can't open the doors, behind my lwb series 3, used to do that once a year.
