One for the hilti-ists please.

Was happily taking down a chimney yesterday (as happily as one can be on the roof in the snow ) and the hilti ran out of duggas. Rotary drill works fine but nothing on hammer. It’s trying but no output. 20 year old Argos jobbie puts out better.

Anyone have a service book / parts diagram / inkling of what’s wrong please?

I’m doing actual work today so won’t look at it for a few nights but I’m just fishing for info at the moment

no idea, I imagine hilti keep their service books closely locked up. Their repair service is quite reasonable though, might be between £100-£200 for repairs, with an agreed cost quote after initial inspection...

They actually give out their service books quite easily, I had problems with a recip saw and they sent me exploded diagrams/parts lists/prices within a couple of minutes of coming off the phone with them. Only problem was, it was cheaper to buy the corded version and swap the parts into my battery powered one

Speaking of which I have since sold the battery one, so if anyone wants the carcass of the corded one they are welcome to it. Thinks it's a wsr1250 or something

Isnt it normally the piston seal that fails? pull it apart and see whats going on

Does it feel like the piston is still working? Maybe the hammer part has just got stuck in the barrel, my breaker did that the first time I used it but a sharpish jab on the ground set it free.

Evening all. Thanks very much for the replies.

My intent was to pull it apart and see if I could work out what the matter is.

Oil? I’m assuming it’s in the manual how much and where? I’d assumed it would be greased.

I’m just in from work, which was a un fun day being wet and cold, so I’m going to get warm and dry and then I’ll pop out and take some photos. I had planned to strip it tonight but that may be tomorrow nights job now.

I haven't seen the inside of one of those TE54's but they are pretty simple in operation you have a conrod with a piston on the end which has an o-ring piston ring. This is recoprocated by the crank connected to the motor. All this does is 'pumps' the cylinder, in which is a free-moving piston. That piston is the hammer and it hits onto the end of the anvil which transfers the striking energy to the tool.

It might be something as simple as a gummed up piston or split o-ring. You can get rebuild kits for most Hilti stuff but I would get it apart first amd make sure it's not something serious like the hammer piston is shattered or broken conrod etc.

TBH the spares aren't cheap so if it's anything more than a service you might do better buying a good used one.

Throw it in the scrap bin , I've had one and it's been a nightmare.
Replacement parts are not available even at Hilti.
Repair wouldn't be worth too
Keep it for spare if you have a similar hammer otherwise it's just a waste of time.
Mine had gears ,ball bearings and armature failure.
And I've had to repair several times till I decided to make it fly 10 meters down to the ground from a roof .
I just hate Hilti products

Bosch has an oil and a grease lubricated version of each hammer kango are good hammers , I don't know if it's a brand born with Milwaukee or Atlas Copco ,or if it's born as stand alone brand and bought by Milwaukee later down the road.
I do really like Makita hammers because they are cheap and you can repair them cheaply even after major failures using OEM parts, plus they are really really really easy to work on.
Bosch too makes good hammers but most important component are really expensive (armature ,field , hammer components ) maintenance kits are easy to get ,and you can easily get cheap non OEM parts as well as for Makita.
I don't like Hitachi even if they are great hammers when they work (part are expensive and they are nightmares to work on)

Ok so that's a bit extreme but it is basically what they say if you try to make a claim on a tool you bought second hand
