Cylinder rental £50 per month!

Hi guys,

A guy I know has an air products cylinder on rental it’s costing him £50 per month

He’s had it for at least 8 years! And used it once!

He’s an old boy and not in the best of health.

so How can I help him out? Shall I cancel the rental on the cylinder?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

You would be mad not to, at 8 years that’s a crazy amount down the drain!

A couple of months with rent free and your deposit is paid for, anything after is money in his pocket, especially if it’s not getting much use. If he’s going to use it a lot (doesn’t sound like it) then there’s cheaper rental deals to be had but it sounds like he would be better going rent free, at least in my opinion.

What ever you do with Air Products get it in writing with a signature
The dealings I had with them were not good to say the least,accounts saying this, branch saying something entirely different & £50 per month ask for a breakdown

With his health the way it is I don’t think he will be welding again.

I'm £10.40 per month inc VAT for rental of two Y-size bottles Argoshield and 100% Argon. With your usage I'd expect your bottles are a bigger size?

maybe time for a solicitors letter to investigate , aim for a refund , there has to be an error there somewhere .

Air Products have, or at least did when I was with them, a 3 tier rental structure. If you get a refill within a certain time you are on the cheapest rental tariff (still not cheap) If you refill less often it jumps to the next stage and the same for the next stage.
I am with BOC now and my rental has gone up recently to about £10/month plus VAT but even that was way cheaper than Air Products and don't get me started on the gas price of Air Products, the final straw was when the price had gone up to approx £190 for a refill of Argon, BOC I am about £40-50 if I recall.

I assume you explained the situation, but did you specifically ask in writing for a 'good will' payment?

If you're getting nowhere, an appropriately worded email of appeal [stressing his age and 'confused mental state' ] to the CEO might elicit some response and understanding . I doubt they'll want to leave themselves open to accusations of taking advantage.....just in case it gets featured on social media .

Yes, he has had it too long so is on tier 3, the most expensive tariff. He would be much cheaper on one of the rent free options if he really needs it.

That's very generous of them [NOT ] given the circumstances i.e. he's forked out £2400 over the agreement period. Bet they'll not give you credit for the full bottle returned.....

I'd still be inclined to try the CEO route before accepting their offer. I know for definite that that approach works.

Make sure he gets the "cancellation" in writing as they have been taking his money by DD and may continue to !

Thats a computer generated bill, pretty sure a phone call to the accounts manager or higher would get a substantial reduction or a refund.
