Double checked and they are not illegal..HoweverProbably but if they insist there’s not much to be done.
I think it’s a bit like the refusing £50 notes - it’s a condition of carrying out business or contract of entry or some such I can’t remember. Like a dress code in a nightclub. It’s a condition you agree to before you go in.
I share your view point though. If they aren’t illegal they should be.
