Woke up yesterday morning with the back of my left hand being really sensitive and what looked like a red rash, being fearful of the contact dermatitis I have been fighting for the last few months I put some Hydrocortisone cream on it and got on with the day being aware of it all the time yesterday - some of you have already guessed- I climbed into the shower last night and the second the hot water hit I KNEW, bloody SUNBURN! Hadn't put my glove on for the "Little bit of tacking up! What a Plank.

Cant believe I’m reading this, as I did exactly the same thing sunday too.

Did some small tacking job in the morning, then I saw the redness late afternoon, back of my left hand, couldn’t work out what the hell it was, thought maybe sign of a heart attack, shingles, god knows.....

Then it dawned on me.,

I’ve never had it before, just from a few tack welds, but the last two years are the first time i’ve not been abroad to far sunnier climes since I was 20, and my skin is now so white I look like a vampire. I’ve had an almost perpetual sun tan for decades, or at least some sun burned colour on me.

Noticed that the thumb seam on the glove I was using had split open, holding hand not torch hand.

All of my parweld gloves were like that from new. I wont buy any more Parweld kit. I still use them to keep my nicer gloves clean

Just getting in on the die grinder part of this thread, the first one I had was electrically-powered and I found if it grabbed it bloody-well GRABBED! changed to a air powered one and I can only assume the lower inertia from the motor rotor has an effect as it's far easier to control. Anyone else found the same?

Ive heard this before and been meaning to try it, but my air grinder was very cheap. It makes sense but Im also wondering if the quality of bearings plays a big part. Cheap die grinders I expect they are all standard ball bearings, better ones may be angular contacts? I assume that would handle a grab much better. I cant safwly use burra above 6mm with the parkside one.

Is a grab, a result of the bearings saying no?

I plan to make a cordless die grinder spindle with 7002's on an er collet extension and see if any better.

And 10 minutes ago whilst stamping letters into a bit of steel sheet I hit the same thumb I burnt yesterday, with a big hammer.

Currently sat with thumb wrapped in ice trying to work out a way of holding the letter stamps which keeps my digits well clear...

Cheap die grinders I expect they are all standard ball bearings, better ones may be angular contacts?

My Metabo uses quality (FAG I think) 6001 bearings, deep groove seems to be good enough, there shouldn't ever be huge axial loads on a die grinder. The bearings aren't preloaded either, if you take the nut off the front the shaft and bearings will slide out, I assume it's to allow for thermal expansion in the shaft. Angular contacts need preloading so I'm not sure how you'll manage that.

Another point with the bearings, the shaft feels rock solid when it's fitted but if you take it out the bearings feel a bit slack, I assumed they were knackered and replaced them with new, much tighter feeling ones a few years ago and the body got too hot to hold, I put the old ones back in and it's perfect again, Metabo clearly knows what they're doing.

Wrap a piece of copper wire round them, to act as a handle. Do you have some twin & earth, earth bonding wire etc. knocking about?

Hmm. My father had a pair of those, wonder where they are?

I did manage to finish off this afternoon using a pair of pliers gripping the stamp in the rounded section of them. Who wouldn't want a dedicated tool though
