Ive never tried stick welding but it makes sense, but its one of those youtube videos that are completely pointless as you wouldn't do it that way (same with most life hacks). as the rod burns it will maintain the arc gap so will continue to arc. but in a production environment its not going to be the quickest way of sticking two pieces of metal together.

Firecracker welding, used to be used in shipbuilding to make sealing welds on plate, never heard of using wood though, i used to have to demo it when i ran welding courses and would either use a copper bar or just tape to hold the electrode in place

I suppose its like any other bad practice in welding like welding vertical down or not prepping your weld, just because it can be done doesn't mean you should do it.

A friend of mine was a rep for Stubbs welding rods, He had a demo where the rod was on a pivot and was touching the steel to be welded, Switched on and the rod remained in contact and burned right down, Sold a lot to "non" welders, Farmers etc, He called them idiot rods, High iron powder on the flux, virtually impossible to get stuck,

Wasn't there a vid on here a year or two ago where a couple of chinese people were making an artic trailer, stick welding fillets without looking, just lean on the rod. Nothing new.
