I have an ambition to try this,someone on here,possibly @Aff ? suggested it.
Anyway whilst laid up with a back injury,I did the usual retail therapy and bought this coil and electronic thing off e bay to experiment.
A year later after doing sod all ,I now have some spare evenings to fiddle,it’s allegedly 36v,so I’d like a mains transformer if possible,to power it,did think of 3 x 12v batteries,but would find it more convenient to use the mains.
Is this practical,if so shall I search on e bay,or a specialist supplier?

Cheap enough, this was one of the first that came up, this type are used a lot in 3d printers, usually 12 or 24v but they seem to hold up pretty well.

I bought a similar, slightly bigger one that arrived in 2020, which is also gathering dust, I havent yet finished making connections and modifying it. 90% there. Planning to do it soon!

Generally these run from 12-50v, higher will give more power.

Im using a Huawei R4850G2 as the power supply, 3kw, 50v/50A which is variable with some electronics trickery. Dont know if they are still on ebay from Australia but it was worth the £90 for that much power. There are cheaper but less compact versions.

Im unsure how great it will be at forging as the power transfer drops past the curie point, but I know nothing about forging.

It needs to heat steel to orange colour.about 800-1000degrees c.

is this the same as one of those heavy coil thingy's that u poke a rod thru and the metal gets red hot....?
be nice to be able to bend 20-25mm round bar without gas....

If you do use a power supply add a chunky switch between it and the module. The modules tend to go pop if they don't have full power available. So switch power supply on and then connect the module.

Presumably it’s better to get a 240v,rather than 220v,as many are.

Yes if you don't have the switch, the heating module stops the power supply from getting up to full voltage quickly and the low voltage makes the module go pop.

With Chinese power supplies I'd over rate quite a lot as their watts are "smaller" e.g. want 10W buy a 20W power supply!

I bought one of these in a 1000W version and then let the magic smoke out, it was going great till the metal I was heating inside the coil, touched a few of the coils and shorted to them, the metal stuck to the coil and as I tried to pull it out, the circuit board lifted off the insulated material I had it on and went on to the metal table. Zap, and blew a few things. I will get another at some stage but I will be putting a high temp ceramic tube over the coils to prevent shorting plus mounting the circuit board in a plastic enclosure for insulation protection.

For power, I rigged up 3x 12V Batteries in series and just used a 36V charger (home made) to charge them up whilst heating, that way the batteries provide the instantaneous power and the charger kept them topped up. Added a big On/Off switch to power it up and the coil was cooled by a small aquarium water pump. Will be looking at a 2.5KW version next.
