For £4k I'd steer clear of an L322. I think you're only going to get a dog of one at that price. I'd say there's nothing comparable to them, especially in V8 form. But the V8s are going to set you back £500 in road tax. You should also budget on buying an IID tool (£300ish if I recall) because it'll save you that in diagnostics.
So that leaves you about £3k to buy a vehicle. You'll do a lot of hunting to find a decent one for that.
I've just bought one (well back in March I think it was) a 4.4TDV8 (2011) with 125k on it, full JLR service history and had just had new tyres and full service before I bought it. Was £12.5k and that was a good price.
If you pay bottom dollar for an L322 you'll be spending your time chasing faults and hate the experience. Well worth paying a bit extra.
Don't be put off by high mileage but it must have been serviced and looked after.
