For £4k I'd steer clear of an L322. I think you're only going to get a dog of one at that price. I'd say there's nothing comparable to them, especially in V8 form. But the V8s are going to set you back £500 in road tax. You should also budget on buying an IID tool (£300ish if I recall) because it'll save you that in diagnostics.

So that leaves you about £3k to buy a vehicle. You'll do a lot of hunting to find a decent one for that.

I've just bought one (well back in March I think it was) a 4.4TDV8 (2011) with 125k on it, full JLR service history and had just had new tyres and full service before I bought it. Was £12.5k and that was a good price.

If you pay bottom dollar for an L322 you'll be spending your time chasing faults and hate the experience. Well worth paying a bit extra.

Don't be put off by high mileage but it must have been serviced and looked after.

Ranger will give you the least bother ,, You couldnt give me a L322 as a gift. Older allroad is missing off that list ,, big one to leave off the list.

We have one at work, shes old and has the Mazda engine, literally no problems at all.

Any LR will cost you money, any cheap RR will bankrupt you, only way to run an old LR is to have a few quid and be a half tidy mech.
Just think 50+k running costs when new can only get higher as the bits of crap age.

It's a complete luck of the draw. I know plenty of mk2 rangers with the original paintwork on the chassis. Like wise I know plenty with no chassis left. It is completely random and seems to bare no correspondence to how the trucks have been looked after

I always take off the rear body tubs off and fit tipping bodies, they stay as good as new like this. It would probably pay to get under there and blast them off once in while, it has to be caused by the mud hanging up in there .

L322 TDV8 are great cars if looked after/have had the right fixes done- mine has just ticked over 125k and is awesome but......... you won't find one worth having for your budget unless it is stellar miles I'm afraid. Decent 100k+ cars are currently running £10-14k, like most vehicles prices have gone crazy last 12 months.

An older L322 with the TD6 engine would be in budget and aren't a bad shout. No where near the power of the TDV8 but sensible and still a very capable vehicle, £4k will buy a half decent 2006 ish - thats what I had prior to the TDV8

I think the VED jumped up in March 2006 so go earlier than that or pay £600 per year as most are in the highest bracket unless you’re getting a commercial

There are a couple @170k miles which are in budget but I'd agree with you land rover love to develop gremlins and I'd probably spend more time fixing it than driving it.

Just about to buy one & cant get it for less than £438 inc the VAT.

Even second hand once sell for £375 upwards & you need to pay £25 to the company to get it changed to your car.

I'd say any TDV8 that's averaged under 10-15k per year probably isn't worth looking at - they need to be driven and reward you for it. Just don't drive one unless you're prepared to buy it because there's not much that compares to it.

My memory is crap . I think my first one (admittedly quite a number of years ago wasn't much more) I didn't buy my latest one as it was thrown in with the vehicle if sold to a member of fullfatrr.com.

Out of those I would go ford ranger with Mazda engine. We had one at work that did 230,000 miles with an untouched engine clutch and gearbox. The only downside was 22mpg

Older Ranger would be my choice. The old ones I had were brilliant, nothing went wrong. The ‘58 plate got new injectors at 100k and that was it apart from pads and tyres. Fuel economy wasn’t bad either.

Older XC90? Part exed mine a month or so back for about that. With all The rear seats folded flat they’re about as big as a Ute bed.
